Après un très bon premier test Hate. Malice. Revenge paru en 2003 qui nous avait laissé pantois, le quintet originaire d’Oakland (Californie) nous re-administre une dose de Brutalcore avec son second opus The Price of Existence. Les Américains de ALL SHALL PERISH avaient agréablement surpris l’auditoire avec leur premier concentré de Metalcore lorgnant sur le Brutal Death. Ce second volet de leur carrière délivre encore une fois une variété de Metal Extrême avec une touche de Hardcore, sonnant comme un enfant bâtard de DYING FETUS ou de HATEBREED. On s’arrête là pour les comparaisons car si ALL SHALL PERISH s’apparentait à un mixage de ces deux formations sur leur premier album, on est loin d’obtenir le même résultat sur The Price of Existence.
Beaucoup plus mélodique, le quintet Californien élaborent plus de compositions léchées que sur le précédent album qui avait fait leur succès : la brutalité rythmique et l’efficacité des morceaux. Plus posé que ce dont ils avaient été capables de nous livrer auparavant, le morceau Eradication nous montre que ALL SHALL PERISH sait encore distiller des rythmiques sauvages et condensées. Pareil pour « Wage Slaves » et son refrain typique Hardcore. Une mise en bouche intéressante même si moins agressive et belliqueuse. Le morceau suivant montre toute l’étendue du talent mélodique des musiciens Américains. Un bon titre mais on a la triste impression que ALL SHALL PERISH a opéré un changement dans sa façon de composer ses titres et insiste plus sur les parties mélodiques et travaillées de leurs arrangements, comme pourront le démontrer des titres tels que « Better Living Through Catastrophe » ou « We Hold These Truths ».
On retrouve un peu du ALL SHALL PERISH première «version» avec le titre « There Is No Business To Be Done on a Dead Planet », un titre de Deathcore vraiment intelligent et finement exécuté. La palette de talent des compositeurs rejaillit sur ce morceau ou encore sur « Prisoner of War » et la variété de lignes vocales de Hernan Hermida. Encore heureux que le front man ne nous ait pas posé des passages en chant clair.
L’autre titre valant le détour est sans conteste « The True Beast » et son intro phénoménal de puissance et de rage. La présence d’un interlude ayant pour but d’aérer l’ensemble a pour conséquence de casser la dynamique des morceaux. De plus, on ressent un certain ennui si ce n’est que l’on est dissipé au long de l’album tant bon nombre de morceaux ne parviennent pas à accrocher notre oreille absolue !! Les titres batailleurs sont trop peu nombreux pour que l’on puisse adhérer complètement à l’univers de l’album.
ALL SHALL PERISH voudrait peut être conquérir plus de fans et la récente signature chez le label Teuton Nuclear Blast ne peut que le confirmer en démontrant avec ce second opus une approche plus léchée et convenue que ce qu’ils faisaient auparavant.
Du coup, une légère déception se fait ressentir au long de cette écoute. Pourtant, celui-ci est loin d’être un opus raté, au contraire, mais cette volonté affichée de rentrer dans le rang et dans les standards nuit à mon goût au caractère original de la formation.
Les Etats-Unis regorgent tellement de formations de Metalcore insipides qu’il serait dommage que ALL SHALL PERISH s’en rapproche. Malheureusement, avec cet album, un petit pas dans cette direction a été franchi. Dommage…
