J’ai comme un bon présage. Un augure ? Possible. Il y’a des CD’s, comme ça, qui attirent l’œil et l’oreille avant même d’en savoir plus sur leurs auteurs ou leur contenu. AUGURY est de ceux-là. Rien que leur provenance en dit long sur les bonhommes : Montréal. Je vous ferais grâce du speech louant les vices et les vertus de la scène Metal canadienne avec exemples foireux à l’appui : STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, KATAKLYSM, CRYPTOPSY et compagnie. Sachez juste, si ce n’est pas encore le cas, que le Canada est en train de devenir une fourmilière grouillante de diamants polissables. Encore une fois, AUGURY en est ! Et Nuclear Blast a bien saisi le potentiel et les capacités du combo en les faisant signer pour leur deuxième album ; Fragmentary Evidence, plus de cinq années après Concealed. Le quartet, qui semble avoir pris l’habitude d’aborder des thèmes visuels célestes et lunaires, s’est entouré d’une vraie brigade de tigres, dans la conception tranchante de leur dernier effort. On retrouvera Yannick St-Amand (DESPISED ICON) à la production, Jean-François Dagenais (membre de KATAKLYSM et collaborations avec MISERY INDEX, DESPISED ICON, MALEVOLENT CREATION) au mixage, James Murphy (DEATH, OBITUARY) au mastering et même Sven De Caluwé (chanteur d’ABORTED) pour l’artwork !
Autant dire qu’avec une team de champions et un talent musical certain, il était difficile de ne pas produire un album remarqué. Au niveau du style, AUGURY se démarque avec un Death Metal assez libre qui tire souvent vers le Progressif. Il y’a, sans doute aucun, une très forte influence de type Blues/Jazz voire Acid Jazz dans les compos. La basse prend une place importantissime là où elle est trop souvent masquée. Présente, mise en exergue sur toutes les pistes sans exception aucune mais avec quelques points culminants et retentissants (« Simian Cattle »), c’est la clé de voute du groupe ! Et ça me fait bizarre d’affirmer ça, moi qui cherchais depuis longtemps une formation capable de donner une place aussi grande à un instrument toujours dans l’ombre. Bon point, voir plus ! N’oublions pas pour autant des guitares tourbillonnantes, presque psychédéliques, hypnotiques qui vous embarqueront dans un univers où le freestyle domine sur les structures carrées et atypiques. On frôle par moment le délire ou la névrose (« Styless »), mais jamais dans l’excès. AUGURY dose tous les éléments au gramme près pour écrire une partition sans fausse notes. Outre la batterie qui effectue un travail de martèlement élaboré et incisif, les canadiens nous offrent une palette vocale spectaculaire ! De nombreux invités viennent épauler Patrick Loisel dans ses grognements profonds et ses envolées criées. Sven De Caluwé, encore lui mais également Youri Raymond (CRYPTOPSY), Filip Ivanovic (AGONY), Syriak et Leilindel (UNEXPECT), Seb Croteau (NECROTIC MUTATION) et Eric Fiset (OBSCENE CRISIS). Pour l’originalité, on entendra aussi quelques couplets chantés à la manière de corsaires ivres (« Orphans Of Living », « Sovereigns Unknown »). Cette différence apportera un peu de fraîcheur à un disque assez long à tenir, nerveusement, en dépit de chansons plus aériennes (« Brimstone Landscapes ») ou de breaks type Lounge d’ascenseur. La dernière piste, longue de onze minutes clôturera la cérémonie en fanfare mais sans grande particularité.
De prime abord, AUGURY avait toute les cartes en main pour pondre un chef-d’œuvre. Et dans un sens, ils ont réussi. Finalement, après tant d’éloges, je retiendrais que ce Fragmentary Evidence est un bol d’oxygène dans son concept. Il est aussi un pied-de-nez aux mœurs du Death qui ont tendance à s’avachir lourdement sur leurs acquis. Même si un peu long sur la fin, ce palet est dans son ensemble, une belle réussite. De bon augure.
