Qu'attend-on d'un tel disque ? Désire-t-on s'exploser la boîte crânienne à coups de double pédale et se métalliser les neurones par des riffs de plus en plus hallucinés ou cherche-t-on seulement l'un de ces fameux voyages intérieurs à travers les décibels ? Alors voilà la merveille : un album ô combien intéressant qui vient vous chercher jusque dans vos ultimes retranchements.
Sous le couvert d'une authenticité musicale, ce groupe norvégien réussit le défi de surprendre là où tout ou presque semblait avoir été dit. En effet, FORLORN possède un extraordinaire filon de compositions efficaces mais aussi un matériel explosif qui balaye tous les préjugés. "Hybernation" sonne comme un compromis entre un Black Metal Symphonique de pure souche et des arrangements futuristes donnant une dimension autre à l'œuvre. Et même si les comparaisons avec DIMMU BORGIR ou THE KOVENANT s'imposent, cette offrande aux guitares vrombissantes, aux solos pleins de hargne et aux rythmes capables d'entraîner tout bon métalleux qui se respecte, déborde de fraîcheur.
Au niveau du chant, l'intéressé semble batifoler à grandes enjambées dans l'ombre vocale d'Abbath (d'IMMORTAL pour tous ceux qui reviennent d'une hibernation musicale prolongée !). Et cette voix agrémentée d'une usine qui marche à pleine vapeur derrière, s'intègre parfaitement au dessin final. Quelques breaks sont à noter tout de même au milieu de cette haine ambiante, ainsi qu'une fin d'album surfant sur une vague acoustique qui tombe à point nommée.
En tout état de cause, FORLORN pond une véritable mine avec cet album et donne l'occasion d'enfoncer le clou et de réussir le pari difficile de se mettre au diapason des plus grands du genre tout en affirmant une personnalité musicale plus qu'évidente. FORLORN doit enfin cette réussite à une performance au juste équilibre entre musicalité, puissance et qualité d'exécution qui parachève le tout.
