J’ai toujours été là, sous chaque forme, dans chaque perversion. Et je serais toujours là, de toutes manières, de tout temps. Ça, ce n’est pas moi qui le dit, mais les puristes de 1349 qui chantaient « I Am Abomination » sur leur Hellfire de 2005. De là à croire dur comme fer qu’un groupe un peu Post-Hardcore, un peu Screamo du Michigan se soit inspiré d’un authentique pionnier du Black Metal norvégien, il y a un océan qui s’appelle l’Atlantique. Gary Holt, pourquoi pas ? Mais les autres, j’en doute. Alors libérons-nous de ces coïncidences et offrons un peu de notre temps à I AM ABOMINATION. En consultant mes archives, je me suis rendu compte que leur premier effort, To Our Forefathers, m’avait relativement plu, à tel point que j’en appelais ouvertement à un successeur cinq étoiles. Et avec le recul, combien de fois ai-je repensé à cet album avec nostalgie en deux ans ? Une, peut-être deux. Pas assez en tout cas pour justifier un emballement apriori démesuré. L’arrivée de Let The Future Tell The Truth concorde donc avec une forme de deuxième chance.
Tous les albums, toutes les progressions entendues ces dernières années me reviennent en pleine face. Définitivement, I AM ABOMINATION n’est pas ce messie tant espéré, quoiqu’avec la mort annoncée d’EMAROSA, désormais orphelin de Jonny Craig, la relève devient soudainement digne d’intérêt. Mais c’est du Post-Hardcore de seconde main. Dans son enveloppe moderne et synthétique, la musique des Américains à tendance à tourner en rond, et ce dès « Contend And Amend », écrasante, c’est un fait, mais incohérente. Phil Druyor essaye très vite de se sortir d’une enveloppe corporelle ingrate avec des vocaux clairs très aléatoires, largement théâtralisés, ce qui était pourtant déjà le cas sur To Our Forefathers sans que ça ne gêne outre-mesure. Les guitares sont constamment dans l’harmonie, cherchant le sweep-branlette-de-manche plutôt que le sweep-in-your-face. Et il faudra s’y faire parce que ça n’arrête pas. On parlera volontiers d’écœurement à partir d’« Hangin’ On » à l’exubérance presque malsaine. Pourtant capable de créer des atmosphères planantes ou d’écrire des solos Heavy, I AM ABOMINATION s’égare dans ce qui apparaît désormais comme une caricature de Post-Hardcore progressif. Les Américains en font des caisses sur l’émotion, sur des refrains vraiment racoleurs, sur des plans qui frôlent la douce colère d’un Emo après la perte de son gecko. Il y a un problème de fond dans cet album, qui n’est déjà pas très pertinent musicalement, mais qui en plus a du mal à paraître crédible dans les intentions. Vous l’aurez compris, c’est un grand mea culpa que je fais aujourd’hui. J’avais un peu surestimé le potentiel d’un groupe qui, avec l’explosion récent de leur registre musical, souffre désormais d’un peu plus de concurrence, ce qui dessert cruellement un Let The Future Tell The Truth qui traversera l’actualité comme un fantôme. Le pire dans tout ça, c’est que contrairement à l’engouement provoqué par To Our Forefathers, exagéré avec le recul mais néanmoins existant, j’ai ici du mal à me projeter dans leur avenir car ils ne montrent aucunes dispositions favorables pour se sortir de ce guêpier.
C’était un mirage et il s’est estompé avec le temps. Peut-être que sur le moment, la magie opère pour ceux qui veulent bien se laisser faire, mais ça ne durera pas longtemps. I AM ABOMINATION m’a terriblement déçu. Je garde en tête l’ouverture d’un « Since 1776 » qui avait lancé To Our Forefathers sur des chapeaux de roues et je repense à cet effort résolument transparent. Je m’étais fait la promesse de ne pas faire de vannes salaces avec leur nom de scène mais en continuant sur ce chemin, je ne pourrais pas résister bien longtemps.
