A chacun sa Bastille. Pour MEMORIES OF A DEAD MAN, la tâche semble déjà un peu plus accessible que pour les émeutiers du 14 juillet 1789. Il s’agit ici pour les Parisiens de faire office de référence au moment d’évoquer le Post-Hardcore à la française. Ce style bien singulier qui a pas mal d’attaches mais très peu de racines avec la France aurait-il besoin d’un leader ? Après avoir écouté leur deuxième album, V.I.T.R.I.O.L., la question est bel et bien d’actualité, tant l’application mise en œuvre par les Franciliens ne semble pas innocente. De l’artwork aux paroles, du contenu musical à la production, tout est admirablement bien pensé, a tel point qu’on se satisfait rapidement de trouver l’un ou l’autre défaut dans cet univers qui ruisselle de cohérence à chaque niveau.
Bien évidement, on ne saluera pas tant ici la performance pure que la hargne, même si ces deux sujets, indépendants l’un de l’autre et complémentaires, méritent qu’on s’y arrête. MEMORIES OF A DEAD MAN propose avec cet album une musique précise et indépendante. C’est exactement le genre d’enregistrement qu’on n’a pas l’impression d’avoir déjà entendu 50 fois. La faute principalement à ces refrains, très aériens et entêtants qui superposent harmonieusement chœurs virils et d’autres, plus féminins. Le rythme de V.I.T.R.I.O.L. est assez faible, pour ne pas dire inexistant. Le groupe s’appuie sur une lourdeur propre au Post-Hardcore et l’ajuste à une dimension plus atmosphérique que la normale. On y retrouve un peu de Sludge, un peu de Grunge, parfois du Doom et du Rock psychédélique en écoutant attentivement, mais la dominante reste clairement un Hardcore contemporain placé sous assistance respiratoire. Les Français actionnent souvent la corde sensible de l’auditeur au travers d’ambiances totalement envolées qui interrompent des introductions pesantes et chaotiques (« Trismegitus King »). Le travail abattu est saisissant, tant dans le son rondouillard de guitares flegmatiques que dans la voix brisée de Pierre qui se marie à merveille avec celle d’Audrey (qui tient également la basse). Parmi les alliages les mieux réussis, celui de « Leave Scars » se dispute le bout de gras avec celui de « Tomorrow, At Dawn ». Les autres n’ont pas toujours cette folie dans le déroulement mais en même temps, c’est ce qui permet à cet album, qui ne se démarque pas par son intensité rythmique d’être vivant, un peu inégal et du coup tout à fait crédible. Les efforts semblent relativement concentrés, au point parfois d’avoir droit à des compositions qui sonnent plus carrées que prévu. Nul doute que MEMORIES OF A DEAD MAN est libre comme l’air dans sa démarche, même si l’application flagrante des Franciliens peut prêter à sourire. En tout cas, du haut d’un deuxième opus très réussi, on ne peut qu’applaudir des deux mains une si belle ascension.
Les réseaux sociaux ne s’y trompent pas, ces Parisiens sont les seuls et uniques responsables de la petite réputation qui se fait sur leur nom. La foule est souvent cruelle mais sa justesse d’appréciation fait d’elle un indice de confiance infaillible. MEMORIES OF A DEAD MAN n’aura probablement pas besoin de se référer à qui que ce soit pour demander la marche à suivre, tant leur cœur les a déjà placés sur de bons rails.
