TEXAS HIPPIE COALITION (THC) est un groupe de Metal sudiste créée en 2004 par cinq illustres inconnus. Big Dad Ritch (lead vocal), John Exall (bass), Randy Cooper (lead guitar), Alden "Crawfish" Nequent (guitar) et Ryan "The Kid" Bennett (drums). Plutôt que de se contenter d'être le énième groupe de Heavy Metal texan Big Dad Ritch, grand fan de PANTERA, invente un style musical, le Red Dirt Metal qu'il présente comme une fusion entre Bluegrass, Southern Rock et Heavy Metal.
En 2014, le gang sort son quatrième album dans des circonstances difficiles. Il doit faire face à la défection de Randy Cooper (lead guitar) et Alden Nequent (rythmic guitar). Le nouveau line-up compte un seul guitariste, Pool Cord et c'est donc un quatuor qui enregistre Ride On que Big Dad Ritch présente comme la quintessence du son de THC, une passerelle entre les précédents albums. Et effectivement, on reste en terrain (trop) connu.
La tracklist plutôt courte est d'une banalité à pleurer. Les intros des morceaux sont punchy et accrocheuses mais débouchent sur des riffs pauvres et des constructions déjà entendues. Si la production s'est bien améliorée depuis Pride of Texas, elle perd en agressivité ce qu'elle a gagné en précision.
Il ne faut pas compter sur les lyrics pour remonter le niveau. C'est depuis toujours le talon d'Achille du combo et çà ne s'améliore pas avec le temps. Une idée, un titre, trois rimes de mirliton et un refrain répété ab nauseam sur tous les tons ne font pas une chanson ("Splinter", "Go Pro", "Rock Ain't Dead" ou "Monster In Me"). Bid Dad Ritch a beau dissimuler la faiblesse du propos par moult grognements, voix caverneuses et cris bestiaux, l'appauvrissement de la musique fait éclater au grand jour l'incroyable médiocrité du chant.
On constate dès les premiers morceaux le vide laissé par le départ de Randy Cooper qui apportait du piment à ce ragoût plutôt fade.
Ride On aurait pu être l'album de la remise en question et du renouveau. Il aurait pour cela fallu admettre que sans ses guitaristes, le groupe devait définir une nouvelle dynamique. Malheureusement THC s'entête à continuer sur sa lancée mais avec une ligne de guitare bien moins puissante et provocante. Si la bande survit à son changement de line-up, elle perd la sonorité badass de ses débuts et ne corrige pas ses défauts intrinsèques. THC est le groupe idéal pour passer en fonds sonore dans un bar de bikers ou faire la première partie d'un concert de HELLYEAH, mais n'en demandez pas plus aux pères fondateurs du Red Dirt Metal. D'ailleurs, si le groupe poursuit son déclin, ce courant musical risque de sombrer dans l'oubli avant d'avoir fait des émules.
