WINTERBURST (FRA) - The Mind Cave (2012)

L’autre jour, je regardais tranquillement les chaines du service public quand j’ai vu l’autre tête d’oignon de Stéphane Bern qui faisait sa pub pour l’émission « Secrets d’Histoire » consacrée au règne du Roi Soleil à Versailles. Et là, ça m’a fait tilt ! Je me suis rappelé de WINTERBURST, ce groupe versaillais qui m’avait envoyé son premier album il y a de ça quelques mois déjà. N’ayant jamais vraiment trouvé les mots justes à l’époque pour décrire cet ambitieux mélange de Death et de Black Metal saupoudré d’orchestrations magistrales, j’avais alors ajourné la rédaction du papier pour le reprendre aujourd’hui. Aujourd’hui dimanche, jour du Seigneur, premier jour de juillet, jour de finale de l’Euro de football, cette date riche en évènements marquants ne pouvait se dérouler sans le plus marquant de tous, à savoir la victoire finale du Verbe sur un album éminemment complexe à décrire.
Pourquoi ? Parce que depuis la mort d’ANOREXIA NERVOSA, l’étendard du Black Metal symphonique français est en berne. Alors je ne sais pas si WINTERBURST a savamment calculé son coup, s’engouffrant avec envie et panache dans un trou béant, mais le résultat de ce Mind Cave est surprenant à bien des égards. Tout d’abord, il faut saluer le travail visuel réalisé sur cet opus, livré dans un digipack soigné avec une pochette aussi sublime que glaçante. Dans ses tons bleus-gris, on sentirait presque un vent catabatique refroidir l’atmosphère avant même le début du CD. Ensuite, il convient de souligner l’ossature simpliste de WINTERBURST. Un chant, une guitare, un clavier et une batterie, en gros, les Français font à 4 ce que DIMMU BORGIR faisait à 6. Pour être néanmoins tout à fait précis, un bassiste a été invité à participer à cet enregistrement, en la personne de Neil Leveugle. Belle perf quand même ! Belle perf parce que ce Black Metal Sympho pouêt-pouêt ressemble à s’y méprendre à celui qui a lancé la popularité du style, au début des années 1990. On pensera évidemment à DIMMU BORGIR à cause de cette alternance de synthés grandiloquents et de la proximité des chants de Vorender et Kyll avec ceux de Shagrath et d’ICS Vortex, saisissants de réalisme sur « Legion Of Souls ». On pensera aussi bien sûr aussi à EMPEROR ou à HECATE ENTHRONED, mais ce sont des généralités. Car s’il y a bien un groupe dont se rapproche WINTERBURST, c’est de LIMBONIC ART, notamment dans le maniement habile de riffs typiquement Black et dans l’utilisation frénétique et angoissante de pianos macabres. La présence de quelques chœurs grégoriens à mi-chemin entre le ERA d’Eric Lévi et le « Carmina Burana » de Carl Orff fait également son petit effet, comme en ouverture de « The Upcoming Chaos ». The Mind Cave se révèle au fil du temps comme un album riche, débordant d’idées, extrêmement composé et d’une précision chirurgicale. Je n’ai pas le souvenir d’avoir traité avec un groupe français aussi orchestral et dantesque de toute ma vie de chroniqueur. Il y avait EMBRYONIC CELLS il y a peu, mais rien à voir avec WINTERBURST. Ces derniers font dans le Black sympho de tradition, respectueux de certains héritages, innovant par moment, putassier aussi dans l’usage presque exagéré de ces arrangements proches du grotesque, mais jamais avare en générosité. Ces garçons, en dépit de la longueur extrême de leur disque, varient les ambiances, proposent du Black de fête foraine (« Circus Of Freaks ») ou des instrumentales très prenantes (« Beyond The Wall »). Vraiment une agréable surprise.
Alors avec un The Mind Cave plus qu’abouti, WINTERBURST ne serait-il pas déjà un peu devenu la relève du Black symphonique français, car étant un de ses uniques représentants ? La question mérite d’être posée. En tout cas, les amateurs de froufrous, d’atmosphères religieuses et d’albums-fleuves seront aux anges avec ce quatuor français qui a désormais le pouvoir de redistribuer les cartes ! Peut-être l’ascension la plus spectaculaire de l’année. Gare maintenant au retour de flamme…
