A première vue, on ne sait trop sur quel pied danser avec UNEARTHLY TRANCE. Alors, délicatement, par le biais de subreptices écoutes, les pensées se veulent plus claires et le voile se lève. Ainsi, ce trio qui ne paie pas de mine se révèle avoir de solides arguments à faire valoir. Formé en l’an 2000 à Long Island à New York, les new yorkais ne tardèrent pas à faire parler d’eux en éditant notamment deux opus sur le label Rise Above Records, propriété du maitre du Doom, Lee Dorian (CATHEDRAL, ex NAPALM DEATH). Belle référence et gage de qualité. La messe est dite. Gorgé de cette expérience fort prometteuse, UNEARTHLY TRANCE signe chez le non moins prestigieux label d’outre atlantique Relapse Records qui aboutit sur cette quatrième rondelle Electrocution. D’ailleurs, tout autre chose, il se murmure qu’une énième compilation des morceaux phares de notre Cloclo national devrait sortir sous le nom de Electrocution 1978… affaire à suivre pour les nombreux fans de celui que l’intelligentsia parisienne surnommait la pile électrique.
En état de transe surnaturelle, touché par la grâce de Dieu (ou la main de Maradona), le combo de la côte-est développe sur ses huit brûlots un Stoner Sludge Doom original et racé avec en prime une production à la limite de la capture live, puissante et gonflée à l’hélium. De cette manière, leur son volumineux et crasseux sied précisément à leurs compositions granuleuses et poudreuses. Héritage lointain d’un NEUROSIS ou d’un ELECTRIC WIZARD (hébergé chez Rise Above Records !), la bande de Ryan Lipynski administre aussi bien des rythmiques monolithiques avec des morceaux écrasant tout sur leur sillage tels que l’attrayante «Burn You Insane» et surtout la déroutante «God is a Beast» qui résume à elle seule ce dont UNEARTHLY TRANCE est capable. De même que l’on pourra également découvrir une piste à la frontière du Punk avec «The Dust Will Never Settle» illustrant les multiples champs d’action du groupe. Ténébreuses et tourmentées, les orchestrations plutôt travaillées font montre d’une écriture habile évoluant pendant ces cinquante minutes de Sludge Doom crasseux et suintant. A l’image d’un PHAZM en peut-être plus hypnotisant, les musiciens construisent une œuvre cohérente et sympathique sur son ensemble. Certes rien de vraiment d’innovant ni de réelles surprises, soit, cependant, cette formation a le mérite d’ériger en son leitmotiv sa principale devise : se faire plaisir.
Fort de leurs quatre albums, il apparaît clair comme de l’eau de roche que UNEARTHLY TRANCE a acquis une nouvelle dimension dans l’univers underground du Sludge Doom à tendance hypnotique Stoner. Une bonne découverte pour ceux qui souhaiteraient élargir leur champ de vision et passer un agréable moment.
