Il est parfois désabusant de s’imaginer l’histoire d’un courant musical entier reposant sur les épaules d’un seul
groupe. Pour ce qui est du Death suédois, il y eut bien avant IN FLAMES, OPETH ou DARK TRANQUILLITY, un combo du nom de
NIHILIST, lequel se sépara en 1989 et donna naissance à deux pionniers du Death Metal scandinave : ENTOMBED et
UNLEASHED… Deux pionniers issus d’un même embryon sans lesquels la scène extrême nordique serait probablement très
différente à l’heure actuelle. Sans vous déballez la biographie détaillée de chacun, sachez simplement que ces deux
entités réunies représentent ensemble 48 enregistrements officiels dont 19 full-lenghts. Nous sommes donc logiquement
réunis aujourd’hui pour assister au sacre de l’un, à savoir UNLEASHED avec As Yggdrasil Trembles, dixième album
d’une discographie bien remplie et irréprochable de qualité, quels que soient les préférences des uns et des
autres…
Irréprochable de qualité, à l’image de « Courage Today, Victory Tomorrow ! », une plage introductive d’une grande
richesse et qui remet UNLEASHED sur de bons rails après deux années de disette. Oui mais voilà, le retour des vikings
s’avère un poil contreproductif. J’attendais personnellement une bonne louchée de leur meilleur Death/Viking Metal, mais
surement pas à ce qu’elle soit servie si bêtement et méchamment. Entre les solos interminables de « So It Begins », «
Cannibalistic Epidemic Continues » et les riffs minables tout court de « This Time We Fight », on ne sait plus trop où
donner de la tête… et surtout, on ne sait plus trop où situer UNLEASHED. Pour peu que toutes leurs sorties sans
exceptions aient été des boucheries grossières et presque parfaites, il fallait bien mettre un point noir sur la joue de
ce visage poupon. As Yggdrasil Trembles est son nom. La Viking touch’, si l’on ôte les mid-tempos étrangement
berçants et le chant plutôt pas mal de monsieur Hedlund, a intégralement disparu. De plus, la production est laconique
et grasse. Des chœurs, des pauses mélodiques, des samples auraient donné tellement plus de coffre à l’ensemble. Merci
grand Dieu, que leurs deux décennies d’entraînement n’étaient pas de trop pour encore créer quelques bons morceaux comme
« Wir Kapitulieren Niemals », « Chief Einherjar » ou « Far Beyond Hell » et sa très bonne introduction. Hélas, cet album
s’inscrit purement et simplement dans une logique implacable : plus le temps passe, plus la probabilité de faire 100% de
réussite à un exercice diminue. UNLEASHED est donc arrivé au stade critique. Sans pour autant avoir creusé sa propre
tombe, le quartet vient de donner quelques coups de pelle mal placés ou malvenus. Là où IMMOLATION était resté
IMMOLATION, les suédois ont beaucoup plus de difficulté à maintenir leur propre autorité devant la scène qui foisonne à
ses pieds. Dans ce domaine là, THYRFING ne s’en sort que mieux puisque situé dans une dynamique ascendante totalement
opposée. Pour la première fois, l’ennui point le bout de son museau et s’il y a bien un signe qui ne trompe pas…
Mais ils vont s’en relever, j’en suis intimement convaincu. Un Viking ne jette pas son glaive dans la boue au premier
accroc. Il se cambre, fait une génuflexion pour mieux bondir et planter son ennemi. Ce n’est pas un album moyen qui va
renvoyer la bête dans sa prison d’acier. Jamais plus UNLEASHED ne sera enchaîné, car leur nom les en interdit ! C’est
une lueur dans la brume…
