J’avoue que j’ai du mal à comprendre. Je n’avais pas été très élogieux la première fois que je fus confronté aux algériens de DEVAST. Du coup, on m’avait gentiment rappelé que j’étais un personnage haineux, complexé, raciste et partisan des races supérieurs. C’est vrai, je l’avais oublié. Du coup, la sortie avortée de cette promo, sobrement intitulée Radical Excruciations Concept était du pain béni pour poursuivre mon entreprise de démolition sournoise. Le successeur d’Art Of Extermination, album source de controverses s’il en est, aurait du mettre tout le monde d’accord. Je déplore qu’une fois encore, je sois amené à ne pas penser que du bien de cette œuvre qui ne rend pas service à une formation au demeurant très sympathique. La vérité, c’est que DEVAST est inexistant musicalement.
Qu’il vienne d’Algérie ou de la Terre de Feu, qu’il soit composé au sommet du Kilimandjaro, sur une barque au milieu du lac Titicaca ou sous le porche d’entrée du Taj Mahal, le Death Metal, quand il est à ce point bâclé, ne mérite pas qu’on s’y attarde. Ce n’est pas faute d’accorder toute sa légitimité au Metal maghrébin, qui possède de belles ressources. Le rendu de cet album est extrêmement synthétique et linéaire, dans la droite lignée de son prédécesseur. DEVAST veut frapper fort, mais ses coups de lame n’ont pas une précision chirurgicale. Ne sachant vraiment se décider entre un aspect brutal et un autre plus technique, ce Metal brouillon est un condensé rugueux de bestialité primaire qui tape vite sur le système. Alors bien évidement, c’est tout à fait remarquable d’avoir des artistes qui veulent donner un nouveau souffle à la musique extrême dans cette région du globe et on peut leur reconnaître une certaine combativité. Mais encore une fois, le Death et le Grind sont deux genres qui demandent un minimum de construction, surtout pour une formation aussi ambitieuse. Je ne suis pas sur que cette accumulation de riffs ambigus et de mélodies ultra-techniques, soutenues par une batterie qui ressemble à s’y méprendre à une boite à rythmes et par des vocaux halouf, soit de toute fraicheur. A vrai dire, même si ça joue très vite (beaucoup trop vite même), on s’ennuie fermement. On a fait le tour de la personnalité de DEVAST au bout de cinq minutes et ni la production d’un niveau correct, ni la sueur qui dégouline de ce disque ne viennent apporter de la rhétorique aux faits. Très inférieur au Brutal Death qui se pratique dans d’autres pays tout aussi insolites (JASAD en Indonésie, TRUTH BE KNOWN à Singapour, RAVAGER au Mexique), celui de nos Algériens n’est pas suffisamment bien construit, ni même bien exécuté pour qu’on puisse considérer que cette scène a un vrai gros potentiel.
Il faudra se tourner vers d’autres horizons pour trouver une trace de qualité dans la scène algérienne. On savait que LITHAM avait de l’avenir. C’est l’occasion pour moi de vous inviter à vous intéresser aux travaux de LELAHELL, qui offre une vraie alternative, intelligente et bien foutue, à ceux qui sont terriblement frustrés par des groupes comme DEVAST, qui n’a jamais su répondre à aucune de nos attentes. Avec sa mise en stand-by récente, une page se tourne pour eux. C’est l’opportunité pour nous de changer de livre.
