Images And Words ainsi que le Live At The Marquee avaient fait de moi un inconditionnel de DREAM THEATER. Et voici qu’en 1994 arrive Awake. Au vu de ce que j’en ai lu un peu partout, je vais certainement passer pour le vilain petit canard ou le chieur de service mais, pour moi, Awake n’est pas un bon album du groupe. Peut-être est-ce parce qu’il est plus sombre, peut-être est-ce parce que je n’ai pas retrouvé le côté romantique (pas dans le sens niaiseux du terme) qui suintait de Images And Words. En tout cas, les compositions, même si elles sont forcément techniquement parfaitement exécutées, n’ont pas vraiment réussit à me saisir comme DREAM THEATER savait le faire auparavant. Je dois bien avouer que certains morceaux ont des parties qui me plaisent et qui s’inscrivent d’une manière entêtante en moi et que je les fredonne volontiers, mais jamais un morceau dans son entier.
En fait, mon attention a commencé à se manifester sur les morceaux uniquement à partir de « Erotomania », première partie de la trilogie qui comprend aussi les deux titres suivants : « Voices » et « The Silent Man ». Même si je n’aime pas le son du clavier, cette instrumentale sait captiver malgré une redondance du schéma principal. La partie centrale, beaucoup plus axée classique, n’y est pas étrangère. Quand je parlais que les morceaux n’arrivaient pas à me captiver entièrement, « The Mirror » en est le parfait exemple. Une introduction vraiment parfaite, puissante et technique, avec une guitare précise comme un rasoir même si monotone et un clavier qui fait monter la tension petit à petit. Cette introduction était d’ailleurs déjà jouée seule lors de la tournée d’Images And Words. Par contre, la suite du morceau laisse parfois à désirer. Où est passé cette capacité du groupe à captiver pendant plus de dix minutes ? Elle semble s’être envolée. Peut-être aussi parce que des dissensions apparaissaient déjà dans le groupe à ce moment. Kevin Moore, qui assurait les claviers, quittera en effet celui-ci après la sortie de l’album.
Techniquement irréprochable, Awake manque de quelque chose. C’est certain, on va me reprocher de montrer du doigt le fait que le groupe chercher à évoluer. Mais ce n’est pas le cas. D’ailleurs, le groupe n’a pas attendu mon avis pour continuer sa route et Awake semble même loin maintenant. C’est juste que je n’ai pas retrouvé l’engouement sans concession que j’avais pu avoir pour des titres comme « Metropolis Part I ». Et j’en suis le premier désolé.
