Mayhem, figure emblématique du Black Metal plus réputée pour ses écarts en tous genres que pour le nombre de ses albums, avait énormément surpris et déçu la majorité des fans de la première heure avec le précédent opus « A grand declaration of war », trop expérimental et synthétique au goût des puristes.
Si Chimera débute sur les chapeaux de roue par le très accrocheur « Whore », Mayhem a tôt fait de varier le tempo et lorgne même vers le doom sur certains morceaux, tels que le mélancolique « Dark night of the soul ». Comme à son habitude, Hellhammer est impressionnant d’efficacité et de maîtrise derrière ses fûts, la basse est assez présente, notamment sur « Impious devious leper world ». Ce nouvel album est plutôt centré autour des riffs de guitare originaux et accrocheurs distillés par Blasphemer. De plus, la production est claire et propre, et même si les expérimentations parfois douteuses d’ « A grand declaration of war » sont laissées de côté pour un son plus brut et direct, on ne peut pas pour autant qualifier cet album de retour aux sources. Comme de coutume chez Mayhem, l’atmosphère est extrêmement sombre et oppressante, elle atteint son paroxysme sur l’excellent « My death », ses chœurs païens et son chant malsain au possible, ou encore sur le titre éponyme très travaillé au niveau des ambiances.
Un disque intéressant dans la composition et l’exécution mais auquel il manque une certaine dose d’inspiration et qui ne marquera pas les esprits ni n’atteindra pas le statut culte de De Mysteriis dom Sathanas.
