La classification périodique des éléments comptait au dernier recensement (février 2010) pas moins de 118 éléments. Pourquoi a-t-il fallu que SLIK HELVETIKA choisisse l'un des plus méconnus pour titrer son dernier album en date, Hafnium ? Parce que c'est un métal ? Oui, mais un métal tout à fait inoffensif, exactement à l'image de cet opus. Formé en 1985 sous le nom DESTROYER, le trio sort quatre EP successifs avant de splitter et, comme souvent, de revenir dix ans après sous un autre nom : SLIK HELVETIKA. Depuis, deux full-lenght ont vu le jour, sans nous faire oublier que le principal fait d'arme du groupe est d'avoir en son line-up un membre (Kjell Benner) ayant tenu la basse en live vers 1984 pour QUIET RIOT. C'est dire s'il faut remonter loin pour trouver une trace indélébile du parcours de ces musiciens, qui n'ont bien que cet opus comme aboutissement d'une longue mais fantomatique carrière.
Originaires de Pennsylvanie, les trois larrons œuvrent dans la plus pure tradition du Heavy à l'américaine. Avec son tempo nerveux et son refrain catchy, "Misery" cherche d'emblée à perpétuer la tradition du gros tube d'ouverture, histoire de faire rentrer direct l'auditeur dans leur univers chromé. Sauf que si le riffing thrashy n'est pas mal pensé pour ce titre rapide, il demeure que SLIK HELVETIKA se rate complètement, offrant à peine un incipit convenable à se mettre sous la dent. Tout y est bon mais rien n'y est mémorable, un jugement qui s'appliquera, nous allons le constater, aux 37 minutes d'Hafnium. Le regard injecté de bon Rock, le trio persiste et signe dans sa démarche : proposer des hymnes façon bubble-gum, sucrés, caoutchouteux, aux aromes synthétiques. C'est le cas pour "Money Tree", "Burnt" ou "Reign". Plus régulière, "Heal Me" s'en sort mieux, de même pour la lourde "Hafnium" et ses 6 minutes à la croisée du Heavy et du Thrash. Seulement voilà, même quand les américains parviennent à combiner avec aisance, certains paramètres récurrents viennent noircir le tableau, à commencer par la voix d'adolescent de Mik Myers (pas le slasher !). Ni lyrisme, ni puissance, il s'agit en réalité d'un chant extrêmement poussif, loin de la musicalité qu'on lui demande. Dissimulé par les cadences militaires de (l'excellente) "Cadaver" et de "King Of Nowhere", on oublie parfois cette lacune majeure, mais sur le long terme, son omniprésence agace. De même qu'on est très vite blasés par son jeu de guitare monocorde. Il manque à l'évidence un second guitariste à SLIK HELVETIKA pour faire transiter leur Heavy Metal de la 2D à la 3D. Régulier dans la linéarité, Hafnium ennuie plus qu'il ne passionne.
On réalise surtout en sa présence que les plus grands disques de Heavy ont été écrits depuis fort longtemps, et qu'arriver comme un cheveu sur la soupe en 2009 avec un album qui aurait déjà été démodé 30 ans plus tôt est une erreur. Ceci étant, ce second disque vibre d'une flamme Heavy Metal suffisante pour réchauffer le cœur des puristes en quête de nouvelles sensations. Pas forcément des sensations fortes, ni même un frisson, mais pourquoi pas ce brin d'empathie que je n'ai pas su manifester à leur égard ?
