LETHAL MIND (FRA) - When Logic Fails (2008)

Il est établi depuis longtemps que la scène française regorge de pépites et d’immondices. C’est comme partout, il y’a du bon et du moins bon. Jusqu'à présent, je ne vous apprends rien. Là où je suis plus dubitatif, c’est sur ce criant manque de personnalité qui devient de plus en plus généralisé devant le nombre incalculable de nouvelles formations. Le style s’approche très souvent d’un hybride entre Thrash nouvelle école, Death conventionnaliste et pour les plus facétieux, quelques notions de progressivité peuvent apparaître au détour du suffixe « -core ». Ce qui m’a dérangé avec LETHAL MIND, c’est cette sensation d’avoir déjà entendu cent fois ce nom, d’avoir déjà vu cent fois ce genre de pochette et de ne plus savoir quoi faire des opus du style When Logic Fails. Pourtant, à son écoute, les parisiens tombent le voile et se montrent plus identifiables que prévu.
A n’en pas douter, ce groupe français est doté d’une grosse personnalité. En tant que disque autoproduit, j’imagine bien que cette démo à été réalisée avec les moyens du bord (sans que ce terme soit forcément péjoratif) et je pense bien que LETHAL MIND doit être très fier du travail accompli tant sur le plan visuel que musical. Il faut parfois savoir proportion garder, il n’est vraiment pas évident de se démarquer du platonisme ambiant, surtout pas en 2009. Je salue donc avec beaucoup de plaisir l’effort qui concerne l’artwork mais pour moi, il manque quand même un petit truc. Le contenu du palet est, pour sa part, une très belle découverte. La piste éponyme qui introduit When Logic Fails est une merveille. Derrière une cadence soutenue se cache un esprit Metal convaincant, adroit mais surtout, un refrain d’une précision d’orfèvre, mis en valeur par le chant rocailleux et profond de Mathieu Fichot. Je ne cache pas avoir eu un peu de mal au début avec cette tonalité éraillée mais au final, les vocaux remplissent leur rôle avec énergie et argumentation. Il faudra peut-être juste revoir l’accent anglais trop franchouillard par moment. « Confined » suit le même schéma avec un rythme haletant induit par un jeu de corde percutant et qui nous gratifie sur la fin d’un solo du plus bel effet. L’arrivée de « The Apostate » fait du bien à tout le monde. Ce break instrumental aux sonorités nostalgiques nous permet de reprendre nos esprits avant « A Wall Of Silence ». Et si selon Bigard, « c’est au pied du mur qu’on voit le mieux le mur », c’est au pied de ce mur de silence qu’on constate qu’il est infranchissable. Cette proposition haute en couleurs, parsemée d’accélérations et décélérations nous en met plein la vue sur le potentiel de LETHAL MIND. « Without Eyes » est sans doute sur l’ensemble, la composition la plus dispensable avec ses sept minutes trente au compteur, même si c’est elle qui met la mieux en valeur le talent de batteur de Rachid (déjà apprécié pour ma part avec CORROSIVE ELEMENTS). Technique, entraînante, une belle partition d’école !
Comme quoi, se fier uniquement aux apparences est une erreur de débutant. Ce When Logic Fails n’est ni plus ni moins la sensation de ce début d’année pour notre belle et riche sphère tricolore. Nul doute que dans même pas un an, on ne se souviendra probablement plus de cette sortie. Alors Carpe Diem mes frères !
