Terrestrials était un album que personnellement, j'attendais énormément. Récapitulons un peu la situation : d'un côté, nous avons SUNN O))), au nom aussi étrange que sa musique, un des fervents spécialistes du Drone Metal. Et de l'autre nous avons ULVER, ces Norvégiens qui ont accumulé énormément de styles au fur et à mesure du temps. Alors quand un album commun aux deux groupes a été annoncé, on ne pouvait que s'attendre à quelque chose de très spécial, mais sûrement aussi à quelque chose d'inédit, jamais entendu auparavant.
SUNN O))) et ULVER ont déjà un passé en commun et une amitié forte. Dans l'album White I (de SUNN O)))), ULVER avait ajouté sa patte au titre "cutWOODED". En plus de ça, les deux groupes ont une formation commune : AETHENOR, qui compte dans ses rangs Kristoffer Rygg et Daniel O'Sullivan d'ULVER, ainsi que Stephen O'Malley de SUNN O))). Tout ça pour dire que les deux formations n'en étaient pas à leur première fois en termes de collaboration et qu'ils savaient quoi faire pour pondre quelque chose d'exclusif.
C'est d'ailleurs sans aucune hésitation que je peux affirmer que c'est la première fois que j'affilie le style de Drone expérimental à un CD. D'ailleurs, ce sera peut-être la seule occasion de ma vie de nommer ce style ! Terrestrials, c'est unique en son genre. En incorporant du violon, des sons électroniques et même un xylophone au Drone / Doom de SUNN 0))), la musique qui en découle ne peut être qu'exceptionnelle. Cet album est un mix de sonorités qui créé quelque chose d'éthéré, mystique et très représentatif. C'est une bande-son de notre monde : quelque chose de triste, quelque chose de beau, mais surtout d'infini. C'est une déliquescence progressive du trait éphémère de chaque vie humaine, un mouvement continu et instable. Passé le côté droneux des morceaux, on arrive sur la partie ulverienne du titre, teinté d'électronique, de violon et autres guitares acoustiques, qui ajoutent un côté exotique, une part de folie dans chaque musique. Sur "Eternal Return" (7 : 30), après une longue intro, les voix des deux chanteurs s'apparentent à des voix divines, comme si quelque chose d'indestructible, qui commande et décide de tout, dictait des préceptes incontestables d'une voix envoutante et charmeuse. Toujours sur ce même titre, le xylophone au début donne une impression de ricochet sur l'eau, une onde qui se propage afin d'en créer de nouvelles. Tout l'album est résumé par ce point. Terrestrials n'est qu'une succession d'ondes accommodées entre elles, reliées de façon ingénieuse, pour produire une musique incroyable et parfaite.
Pour moi, ce scud dispose d'une atmosphère magique, mystique, quelque chose d'incompréhensible pour l'Homme. Terrestrials est la rencontre de deux entités immortelles qui ont confronté deux styles de musique pour n'en créer qu'un seul, et ça, c'est très fort de la part de SUNN O))) et ULVER. Ce CD est un alien de la musique extrême, quelque chose d'inédit, de magnifique et d'inimitable. Le produit de la collaboration entre ces deux groupes a créé une légende, un opus qui reste et restera à tout jamais gravé dans l'histoire de la musique extrême. Je dis "musique extrême", mais Terrestrials arrive à un niveau où de telles mélodies n'appartiennent plus à la simple musique. C'est un album que je recommande impérativement pour tous les passionnés de musique.
