Il est toujours très difficile de chroniquer l’album solo d’un musicien faisant partie d’un groupe majeur. Spécialement lorsque celui-ci officie dans un style particulièrement hermétique comme le prog. On a vu bien des tentatives se casser la gueule par manque d’imagination, ou plus simplement par crise d’ego surdimensionné. Les exemples ne manquent pas, et je ne livrerai pas de liste exhaustive en ces lignes. J’ai un profond respect pour Jordan RUDESS, en tant que musicien évidemment, mais aussi pour avoir apporté à DREAM THEATER toute la délicatesse et l’équilibre dont ils avaient besoin. Alors juger son travail devient délicat, tant je souhaite lui apporter toutes les louanges qu’il mérite. Et ça tombe bien, puisque des louanges, The Road Home en mérite à foison.
Exercice de style périlleux que de s’attaquer à des morceaux phares de groupes phares de l’histoire du rock progressif. Le sieur RUDESS nous offre ainsi une relecture de pièces maîtresses comme « Dance On A Volcano » de GENESIS, « Sound Chaser » de YES, « Just The Same » de GENTLE GIANT, ou encore « Tarkus » d’ELP. Pas le genre de rengaine bastringues qu’on refile lors d’une kermesse ou d’une fête de patronage.
Autant mettre tous les atouts de son coté, ce que Jordan a fait en convoquant Rod MORGENSTEIN, phénoménal batteur des DIXIE DREGGS, Ron THAL, guitariste déjanté, Neal MORSE, génie et accessoirement ex chanteur de SPOCK’S BEARD, ainsi que Kip WINGER, qu’on ne présente plus (d’ailleurs, une réévaluation de la carrière de ce musicien extraordinaire s’impose). Beau tableau de chasse, d’autant plus qu’ils ne sont pas la pour faire joli, mais bien pour permettre à Jordan de s’amuser avec des collègues de son niveau hallucinant.
Certes, le son est moderne, ce qui peut parfois donner une impression bizarre à l’auditeur, mais l’interprétation sans faille saura le rassurer. Jordan n’étant pas exactement ce que l’on peut appeler un bleu, les titres défilent, les perles s’enfilent, et les clients rejoignent la file. Dont je fais partie. Mention spéciale à « Just The Same » et « Tarkus », pour la qualité de jeu bien sur, qui colle aux versions originales tout en apportant une touche personnelle, mais aussi pour l’interprétation de Kip, qui restera au même titre que David Coverdale une des plus belles voix que le Hard-rock ait connu.
Je ne saurais donc trop remercier M. RUDESS pour cette petite heure passée en sa compagnie. Heure à l’image de l’homme. Simple, agréable, et laissant une très bonne impression.
