Quatrième album pour les natifs de Glasgow, et déjà la maturité pointe le bout de son nez. Ils ont trouvé leur son, si particulier depuis le début de leur carrière, mais il s’accompagne cette fois ci d’une production ad hoc. La recette est simple, encore fallait il la dénicher, mélange d’influences hétéroclites, couplets rapides et quasi hystériques, et refrain heavy, puissant et accrocheur. C’est efficace et ne donne pas l’impression de déjà-vu, même si certaines sources apparaissent comme plus qu’évidentes à l’écoute.
La musique de MENDEED résulte d’un habile mélange de Heavy des années 80 (RAGE, HELLOWEEN, IRON MAIDEN, JUDAS PRIEST, voire SLAYER), et de ce que l’on appelle le néo Metal des années 2000 (SOILWORK, CALLENISH CIRCLE, IN FLAMES). Cela donne lieu à des compositions variées, tantôt rapides (très parfois !), tantôt bien lourdes, tout ceci à l’intérieur du même morceau. L’alchimie marche assez bien, et on se laisse prendre au jeu assez facilement. Tout du moins au début. Car la recette se répète tout au long de l’album, et on en vient à regretter au bout d’une trentaine de minutes la présence de titres vraiment forts. Certes, « The Dead Live By The Love » et son refrain digne du « Time Waits For Noone » de RAGE est fort bien troussé, avec ses couplets rugissants, « Gravedigger » est presque digne de figurer sur un bon album du PRIEST nouvelle version, avec son turbo compresseur rythmique. L’intermède acoustico-médiéval de « Blood Brothers » nous ramène aux heures épiques d’un MAIDEN mid 80’s, le refrain de « Through Dead Eyes » ressuscite les émotions passées de « Eagle Fly Free » des Citrouilles, « Reload ‘N’ Kill » relance la machine SCANNER, époque « Buy Or Die » de la meilleure façon, et « It’s Not Over Yet » semble le fils caché d’une union contre nature entre OVERKILL et PRETTY MAIDS. Mais ça ne suffit pas pour rendre l’écoute haletante, on en vient presque à croire qu’il ne s’agit que de gimmicks placés de ça et là, pour transformer l’album en jeu de piste, sorte de Trivial Poursuit Metal, à qui devinera le mieux quelle groupe à influencé telle chanson. C’est certes très amusant au début, mais rapidement lassant pour qui exige de bonnes chansons, tout simplement. Ne vous méprenez pas, c’est un bon album, agréable à écouter, mais on pourrait s’attendre de la part de ces jeunes musiciens à plus qu’une simple révérence au passé. Pour qui a découvert le Metal récemment, le plaisir sera non dissimulé. Pour les vieux briscards du riff saturé, rien de neuf.
Mais ne jouons pas les vieux grincheux, laissons aux jeunes la musique qui leur revient. Et puis après tout, voir son album chroniqué en utilisant les noms de JUDAS PRIEST, HELLOWEEN, IRON MAIDEN, RAGE ou SLAYER, c’est déjà un bon point non ?
