Si cet album semble suivre les sillons tracés par l'album précédent Ride The Lightning, il est évident que la démarche de composition a évolué ; on ne trouve quasiment plus trace des compositions de Dave Mustaine et Kirk Hammett a enfin participé activement à l'alchimie formée par les piliers du groupe que sont Hetfield, Ulrich et Burton.
Une heure de durée cela peut être très long pour un album de seulement 8 titres. Que nenni ici, tout passe si vite que la baffe est encore plus douce à encaisser. Et quand on pense qu'il n'y a "que" 8 morceaux sur le disque... 8 morceaux mais totalement atypiques, allant parfois jusqu'a 9 minutes ("Master Of Puppets"), un instrumental de 8 minutes dont la colonne vertébrale se trouve être un solo de basse par justement ce bassiste hors norme qu'était Burton.
Coté production, on est encore loin de Bob Rock et de sa réalisation polissée et ne laissant que peu de place à l'humain... Un son tranchant comme un rasoir, ronflant pour la paire rythmique Hetfield/Hammett, et à l'époque un son de batterie énorme pour le sieur Ulrich. Il faut rajouter à cela une basse que l'on entend réellement et qui a une place prépondérante dans la musique du groupe, ce qui se fait de plus en plus rare dans un disque de Thrash (l'instrument est généralement relégué au rang d'appui aux guitares rythmiques et noyé dans les vagues de riffs...).
Master of Puppets est l'album qui a fait de METALLICA à l'époque un groupe mature (le Black Album 5 ans plus tard lui donnera la notoriété que l'on connaît actuellement...). Un groupe qui avait déjà gagné ses galons parmi toutes les autres formations et qui à l'époque nous offre une troisième pièce à son oeuvre et laisse entrevoir un potentiel et un avenir ENORME.
