MYSTERIA (FRA) - Sufferin' (2010)

Le mystère reste entier. Qui suis-je ? Où vais-je ? Autant de question auxquelles MYSTERIA n'aura pas su répondre en plusieurs essais. Monté sous forme de duo en 2003, le groupe (qui aurait aussi pu s'appeler ENIGMA, PROBLEMA, INTRIGA...), veut alors aller plus loin, plus haut, plus fort, et peaufine son line-up en recrutant Reno (basse) et Manu (batterie). Leur carrière tergiversante semble décoller à la fin des années 2000, quand paraissent successivement deux démos : l'une éponyme en 2008 et Sufferin' en 2010. Une période de rodage qui accouche même d'un premier full-lenght (lui aussi intitulé Sufferin' puisqu'il contient les trois titres de la démo du même nom) en 2012. Enfin, après presque une décennie d'errance, MYSTERIA va pouvoir mettre à disposition d'un public chauffé à blanc sa personnalité métallique. Tout ça est idyllique. Sauf que...
Sauf que pour être franc, c'est pas terrible. Quand tu écoutes Sufferin' (la démo, puisque c'est d'elle dont nous parlerons ici), il y a comme une fatalité désobligeante qui revient en boucle. Nous sommes toujours très heureux d'accorder une tribune aux plus petits, à l'underground tricolore, et Dieu sait que les bonnes surprises sont légion, autant que les déceptions. Hélas, cette démo en est une, puisque malgré une bonne volonté évidente, MYSTERIA est un projet extrêmement limité. Financièrement, pour commencer. Enregistrées et mixées par le groupe lui-même, les chansons souffrent d'une production artisanale qui gâche affreusement les quelques beaux arguments proposés. Le son n'est vraiment pas fameux et dessert surtout le chanteur, Laurent, dont on nous vantait "la voix si caractéristique". Oui, en effet, Lolo pour les intimes est un chanteur qui joue d'un certain charisme avec un timbre épuré et profond. On détecte cette puissance vocale principalement sur les refrains, qui sont ce que MYSTERIA sait faire de mieux. Celui d'"Hero" est intéressant, sauf qu'il survient après une intro interminable et hasardeuse. Les parties rythmiques sont assez convenues, entre un Thrash pépère et un Heavy mesuré. Pas d'emballement mais une énergie louable, ce premier morceau se veut fatalement énigmatique. Le titre éponyme qui lui succède est un peu plus prenant avec cette guitare lead qui tourne en rond façon Post Rock, ce pont hypnotique et le chant sourd de Laurent. Composition plus soft et travaillée, "Sufferin'" est assurément la satisfaction de cette démo puisque sous ses traits menaçants, "Disorder" est aussi inoffensive qu'un Bouteflika sous Lexomil. Certes, le riff principal est rentre-dedans, mais la désorganisation qui règne sur la structure de ce titre le rend surtout lassant. A vrai dire, on s'ennuie rapidement. L'amateurisme est parfois une arme. C'est ici un défaut.
"MYSTERIA nous propose maintenant un large panel de compositions teintées d'influences diverses qui nous permettent de dire "ça nous fait penser à..." sans jamais les confondre avec d'autres".
Sans vraiment le vouloir, le biographe du groupe a mis le doigt sur leur principal problème. Car les compositions de MYSTERIA, en l'état, ne nous font penser à rien mais on pourra les confondre avec d'autres. On aurait par exemple préféré une ressemblance plus marquée et plus efficace avec un grand nom de la scène Metal, tel que METALLICA dont le nom nous est brièvement évoqué par cette démo, plutôt que cette progression prudente et casanière, de peur de verser dans un improbable plagiat. Ce quatuor a la passion du Metal dans le sang, c'est une évidence. Alors on ne pourra que trop lui conseiller d'investir pour son art et de libérer son talent. Pour que l'underground soit un bastion et pas une caricature.
