Dans les entrailles du Berlin profond et intransigeant, là où les currywurst règnent en maîtres incontestés sur le paysage gastronomique, sévissait jadis un groupe du nom d'AKRIVAL. Je dis jadis car depuis 2008 et ce second opus intitulé Vitriolic, plus aucun signe d'activité. Et la France est l'un des rares pays à le regretter, car l'un des rares pays à avoir eu vent de cette sortie, principalement à cause de sa parution sous Pictonian Records (leur deuxième sortie après Ocean de SAEL). Les autres ne sachant pas trop ce qu'ils ont raté, cette chronique vise à rétablir la justice, car hyper-somnolent ou pas, AKRIVAL est une formation qui respire encore et qui, semble t-il, avait de l'effort à revendre. La plongée au cœur de Vitriolic n'en est que plus savoureuse.
Gas geben ! Appuyer sur le champignon, c'est le secret de ce quatuor, qui ne prend aucune forme de précaution avant de nous rentrer dans le lard. On ne sait pas trop où cet album va nous conduire (même si cette pochette tourmentée peut nous le faire deviner), mais ça ne durera pas longtemps. Sans prendre de pincettes, "Vitriolic Circles" déroule son Black Metal hargneux, fringuant, prototype même d'un Art Noir sans chichis mais avec suffisamment de musicalité et de clairs-obscurs pour vous faire remuer le scaphandre. Les mecs y vont à l'expérience, et même si le poste de bassiste parait maudit (sept musiciens ont endossé le costume et aux dernières nouvelles, AKRIVAL cherche toujours la perle rare...), tout le reste est cohérent. Il y a trois survivants de la période APOSTASY (nom du groupe entre 1994 et 1999), dont l'incontournable Scarog, qui vocifère derrière son micro depuis les premières heures. Sa prestation est donc rôdée même si au fil de l'album, elle sombre en linéarité. C'est d'ailleurs un paramètre symptomatique de cette œuvre vivace. Le Black Metal exécuté ici est teigneux, moucheté de rythmiques imprévisibles, de riffs casse-gueules, d'une violence sonore permanente qui hante le décor quand quelques leads mélodiques se ramènent, mais il reste définitivement au même niveau d'intensité sur la durée. Si comme moi, vous aimez les éclaircissements apportés par de rares arrangements macabres ou d'éparses atmosphères sépulcrales, alors n'écoutez surtout pas un "Lost Man's Domain" qui, lui, ne vous écoutera pas non plus. Les compositions sont solidement ficelées. C'est comme un rôti, y a pas un morceau de viande qui fout l'camp. Sauf qu'il nous manque les flammes de l'enfer pour le braiser. Les amateurs de barbaque crue sauront apprécier. Standardisé et à terme plutôt stérile, Vitriolic est un bloc homogène qui s'apprécie sur le moment et qui revêt toutes les qualités de la catharsis spontanée. Un exutoire brutal dans lequel on ne se retrouve pas forcément, sauf en partant dans l'optique de s'en prendre une bonne dans la gueule.
A titre indicatif, même un morceau comme "War Commands", qui annonçait du changement et de la couleur avec ses huit minutes, se dévoile comme une sphère impénétrable. Une tempête Black Metal, l'œil du cyclone en moins. Du coup, AKRIVAL perd un peu du charme que j'avais détecté en lui au moment de débuter cette chronique. Vitriolic est un agrégat de bonnes intentions, de sueur et de fronde auquel il manque l'esprit "tête de moutons empalées et jeunes vierges sacrifiées". Trop fort sur la forme et pourtant trop faible, même pour convaincre le plus Malin.
