Etant donné que VEIL OF MAYA se place dans la liste de mes groupes favoris, continuons l'épopée ! Certes, il n'en faut peut-être pas beaucoup pour m'impressionner, mais ce Deathcore si massif, si puissant, il faut y goûter au moins une fois, ne serait-ce que pour se plonger l'espace d'un instant dans cet univers si tordu que seuls nos ricains savent retranscrire. Un nouveau chapitre s'est écrit en 2010, il s'appelle [ID].
Encore une fois, on nous offre une cover bien mystérieuse qui ne dit pas grand-chose sur le contenu. Et comme d'habitude, nous avons droit à une intro hypnotique. Alors que l'on s'attendait à un bête réchauffé, "Umbreakable" viens immédiatement ôter cette pensée de notre esprit avec ses guitares virevoltantes. Jusque-là, ça à le mérite d'être clair. Notre petite bande n'a pas l'intention de se reposer sur ses lauriers ! Les compositions redoublent de puissance comparé à The Common Man's Collapse. Dès les premières écoutes, on repérera sans doute quelques rares structures déjà empruntées à son aîné mais finalement ça n'est qu'anecdotique. [ID] a bel et bien sa propre identité et il n'hésite pas à nous l'ancrer au plus profond de nos oreilles. Une batterie plus écrasante que jamais ainsi que des riffs fichtrement astucieux, entraînants pour la plupart ("Conquer"), plongeants presque dans l'angoisse ("Dark Passenger"). Les vocaux de Brandon quant à eux se sont aiguisés afin de mieux nous trancher les tympans, c'est d'ailleurs un véritable plaisir de constater que le gaillard alterne toujours aussi efficacement ses screams et ses growls qui ont pris un peu d'épaisseur avec le temps. Citer un morceau sortant du lot est difficile dans la mesure où chacune des pistes proposées sur ce CD est unique. Les fans de Deathcore trouveront largement de quoi se satisfaire sur "Resistance", une chanson qui file à vive allure et carbonise la cervelle telle une déflagration des plus ardentes. Ce coup ci, VEIL OF MAYA nous colle deux interludes: "Martyrs" et "Circle" afin de nous reposer quelques instants, enfin... tout est relatif. Une fois de plus, la durée est assez courte, mais bon sang, on ne s'ennuie pas ! Même sur "Codex", nos p'tits gars nous incitent à rester dans la course jusqu'au bout en mettant les bouchées double avec un jeu de batterie assommant et une bonne dose de guitares beuglantes. Puis c'est le silence. On relève la tête afin de s'assurer que la galette est arrêtée, on fronce les sourcils et on rappuie sans hésiter sur la touche "play".
Je vous l'assure. Je n'avais pas pour intention de leur faire de cadeaux, loin de là. Je me disais qu'après un enivrant The Common Man's Collapse, toutes les compositions de cet album allaient immédiatement se placer dans l'ombre de leurs ainés. Eh bien il n'en est rien, VEIL OF MAYA à su reproduire ce petit quelque chose qui fait leur succès. Les fans du groupe prendront leurs marques rapidement grâce aux pistes qui paraissent aux premier abords familières et accessibles, mais qui au fond se révèlent bien plus complexes. Pour ceux qui ne se sont pas encore familiarisés avec les ricains, c'est une très bonne occasion pour entamer le voyage. Peut-être légèrement moins accrocheur que son prédécesseur, [ID] a tout de même su nous faire tomber par terre, et haut la main. Espérons cette fois qu'au prochain chapitre, nous ne pourrons plus nous relever.
