La légende raconte qu'en des temps immémoriaux, Samson, yeux crevés, trahi par son épouse Dalila, dépouillé de sa force légendaire, s'en est remis à la prière pour faire écrouler à mains nues le temple sur les Philistins qui se gargarisaient de cette humiliation publique. Incontestablement, il y a un peu de ce mythe sur la pochette alternative de Waiting For The End To Come, le onzième album studio des Canadiens de KATAKLYSM. Au-delà de ce travail d'excellente facture réalisé par l'Israélien Eliran Kantor (celui de la pochette de In War And Pieces de SODOM, du Dark Roots Of Earth de TESTAMENT ou, plus récemment, du Life Sentence de SATAN), on notera surtout l'ironie du clin d'œil, la force spectaculaire de Samson prenant racine dans sa longue chevelure. Alors KATAKLYSM perdrait-il un peu de sa puissance en passant chez le coiffeur ? Difficile à dire, d'autant que son Death Metal a déjà perdu de sa superbe au cours de ces dernières années, marquées du sceau d'un Heaven's Venom furieusement médiocre.
Trois ans après, qu'il est bon de retrouver un peu de sérénité au cœur d'un album qui, comme chacun des dix commandements qui le précède, dévoilera une part de mystique et une part de virilité assumée. KATAKLYSM oblige, la recette reste inchangée. Reste la fraicheur, le dynamisme, l'inspiration, trois éléments qui ont fait défaut à Heaven's Venom et qui retrouvent un brin de spontanéité ici. Ecrasant, capable de déraciner un chêne centenaire, cet opus renoue aussi avec des éléments plus arrangés, quelques petites transitions pas désagréables et une certaine cohérence dans l'écriture, comme en atteste un "Fire" introductif pour le moins... cataclysmique ! Conservant sa colonne vertébrale articulée autour de la triplette Iacono / Dagenais / Barbe (ensembles depuis 1998 !), le combo en a profité pour placer Olivier Beaudoin (NEURAXIS) à la batterie pendant que Max Duhamel décuvait tranquillou en cellule de dégrisement. Résultat convaincant puisqu'une forme d'alchimie prophétique semble régner sur ce disque, particulièrement sur des compositions aussi puissantes qu'imaginatives comme "Like Animals" ou "Under Lawless Skies" (à noter que cette dernière sera un vrai temps fort de l'opus, de par sa mélodicité et son groove à toute épreuve !). Niveau chant, Maurizio étoffe sa panoplie, sortant du growl Death guttural bateau pour proposer des lignes plus aigues, plus criardes qui dédoublent sa présence, instaurant un côté pluripersonnel aux vocaux (d'aucuns oseront employer le terme "schizophrénique"). Mais plus révélateur encore que tout constat uniquement technique, Waiting For The End To Come passionne. Il passionne comme aucun album de KATAKLYSM ne m'a passionné depuis Shadows & Dust. Mieux encore, parce qu'il s'achève sur un "Elevate" aux contours Death atmosphérique prenant, émouvant selon les sensibilités, cet album organisera en bout de course un stand "nostalgie" qui sera foutrement racoleur.
Onzième full-lenght et à vrai dire, si ce n'est pas le meilleur, et de loin, ça flotte quand même bien au-dessus de leurs dernières productions. KATAKLYSM s'est remis dans le sens de la marche en livrant un effort sérieux, construit, abouti. Les Canadiens, qui pour la première fois, ont espacé deux de leurs opus de plus de deux ans (trois en l'occurrence), tiennent peut-être une piste pour reconquérir leurs terres et une bonne raison supplémentaire pour ne pas aller chez le coiffeur.
