Après la parenthèse du diptyque Black Meddle de 2008 et 2010 qui mériterait bien d’être inscrite une bonne fois pour toutes dans le Grand Livre des révolutions industrielles les plus stupéfiantes de l’histoire du Black Metal, NACHTMYSTIUM ne pouvait pas en rester là. Toujours et inlassablement conduite dans des sentiers escarpés par son magnétique leader, Blake Judd, la bande de DeKalb dans l’Illinois a encore une fois, totalement modifié son approche conceptuelle du Black Metal à l’occasion de la sortie de Silencing Machine, son sixième album studio depuis sa formation en 2000. Ce qui n’était au début qu’une réinterprétation gélatineuse de DARKTHRONE et NARGAROTH s’est vite transformée en une entité singulière et dégingandée, n’hésitant pas à jouer au petit chimiste en herbe sur ses propres créations, disséquant, analysant, injectant, scalpant, empaillant tour à tour sa musique pour en faire un cadavre aux membres grossièrement scotchés au tronc. Une fois de plus, l’excitation de se faire surprendre prédomine à l’entame de cette œuvre qui, vous allez le constater, n’en finit pas d’embellir le mythe NACHTMYSTIUM.
Les deux derniers albums étaient pugnaces, vaporeux, expérimentaux, tapant dans un délire industrialo-psychédélique encore inédit. Silencing Machine sera son Doppelgänger maléfique. Les Black Meddle avaient en eux quelque chose de positif, d’encourageant, d’ouvert. Silencing Machine sera leur pendant paranormal et sombre. On retrouve totalement le NACHTMYSTIUM torturé, viscéral et problématique de la période Demise, quand leur actualité était faite de splits avec XASTHUR, KRIEG et autres ZALNIT. Un retour au Black Metal primaire et rugueux ? Oui et non. Il faudra tout de même attendre la vingt-sixième minute et « Borrowed Hope And Broken Dreams » pour avoir droit à un premier bol d’oxygène après près d’une demi-heure d’un Black Metal incisif et limite old-school, à peine rehaussé de fanfreluches électroniques sur l’éponyme ou d’un long passage instrumental tranquillisant sur « And I Control You ». Du groove, il y en a. Mais au même titre que celui qu’on peut trouver parfois chez BURZUM façon « Lost Wisdom ». La première partie de Silencing Machine est donc des plus surprenantes, parce qu’elle semble en rupture totale avec les efforts consentis précédemment. La donne change donc à partir du cinquième morceau, carrément plus Rock N’ Roll que Black Metal. Dès lors, NACHTMYSTIUM retourne explorer son univers épique, décalé, fantasque qui sait illustrer n’importe quelle situation de la vie courante. Par exemple, à l’hôtel parisien du Crillon, c’est probablement de la Lounge Music qui est diffusée dans les ascenseurs. Eh bien dans ceux du Majesty Of The Seas, garni de 2000 métalleux, on retrouvera son pendant Black / Lounge avec « Give Me The Grave » de NACHTMYSTIUM. Les Américains ont encore une fois frappé fort, même si on sent beaucoup plus de retenu et un retour certain aux racines Black des débuts. L’accent est mis à égale proportion avec l’originalité sur les ambiances glacées, la production dégoulinante et l’odeur de souffre qui agrippe vos narines. Rien de vraiment comparable avec les Black Meddle donc, bien que certaines compositions éminemment créatives (que dire de l’incroyable conclusion « These Rooms In Which We Weep », à la fois soft et mélancolique ?) leur adresseront des œillades non-dissimulées.
Grand, peut-être pas aussi grand que je me l’imaginais, ce Silencing Machine est une progression artistique, dans le sens où elle jette un voile sur les intentions futures d’un groupe décidément imprévisible. A mi-chemin entre la première et la deuxième période de NACHTMYSTIUM, il est la synthèse la plus équilibrée qui soit entre les ères paléozoïque et mésozoïque de la horde. Rétrograde et évolué à la fois, il impose définitivement Blake Judd et les siens comme des visionnaires qui se plaisent à manipuler le temps. Et qui y parviennent avec brio.
