TEARS OF MAGDALENA est un groupe venu de Finlande, pratiquant un Metal symphonique mené par une voix féminine et des growls masculins plus virils, et dont le batteur porte un joli bandana sur la tête. Bon sang que c’est original, de toute ma vie je crois n’avoir jamais vu de groupe similaire auparavant …
Bref, vous vous doutez bien que la chronique que vous lisez actuellement ne va pas déborder d’originalité, à l’image de ce Myths And Legends d’ailleurs, alors pour une fois, procédons autrement. Car en creusant un peu pour faire connaissance avec TEARS OF MAGDALENA, on réalise bien vite que ce combo, dont le premier skeud vient à peine de voir le jour, subit déjà bien des déconvenues, qui susciteront certaines moqueries ou de la pathétique compassion. A vous de juger …
Les infos qui suivent sont donc extraites du site officiel du groupe …
TEARS OF MAGDALENA a été fondé par la chanteuse Lena Lee, le chanteur Vasstago, le guitariste Tomi, le bassiste Tommy et le batteur Jukka N…. euh non oups le batteur Peuge. Tout ce petit monde a donc composé Myths And Legends. Enfin non, pas tout le monde, puisque « Vasstago n’a rien composé, il ne joue d’aucun instrument et doit même se faire aider pour écrire ses textes » …
Tout heureux de matérialiser tant d’effort, TEARS OF MAGDALENA décide donc de splitter. Ainsi, Lena Lee et Vasstago quittent le navire pour aller fonder leur TEARS OF MAGDALENA (www.tearsofmagdalena.net), affirmant que Lena Lee a entièrement produit Myths And Legends, et que Peuge et Tomi n’ont jamais été que des musiciens de session. La classe …
De leur côté, les trois membres restant poursuivent l’aventure sous le nom de … TEARS OF MAGDALENA (www.tearsofmagdalena.com), engagent une nouvelle chanteuse (Jevgenia) et confient les chants gutturaux à leur bassiste Tommy.
Depuis, les deux clans se font la guerre, à grands coups de menaces et déclarations provocantes. A titre personnel, voilà tout à fait le genre de situation qui me désole et encore plus lorsque cela touche un groupe de Metal … Ce contexte navrant gâche complètement l’impact d’un premier opus prometteur.
Car si il ne révolutionne pas le genre, Myths And Legends s’inscrit dans la lignée des premiers NIGHTWISH (pour ceux qui n’avaient pas encore saisi le parallèle évident …), voire THEATRE OF TRAGEDY et TRISTANIA (époque Morten Veland). Quelques ambiances et parties de piano vampiriques rappellent DIMMU BORGIR, mais dans l’ensemble on a affaire à un duel voix féminine / growls sur fond de Metal symphonique. Un Metal symphonique à plusieurs facettes, qu’il s’agisse des vocalises enchanteresses de Lena sur « Aurora Borealis », du titre accrocheur « Immortal Love » qu’on imagine composé pour être LE single, ou encore du plus entraînant « The Eastway ».
Mais tout l’album n’est pas de ce calibre (surtout que règne un sentiment général de « déjà entendu » nightwishien, quand même), c’est pourquoi on se contentera de citer Myths And Legends comme le premier album d’un groupe au potentiel intéressant … Or avec tout ce bordel autour de TEARS OF MAGDALENA, il va passer où, ce potentiel ?!!…..
