Les Luxembourgeois de FUNERARIUM ont initié leur carrière voilà huit ans sous le nom de UTHER PENDRAGON. Le duo, composé des deux têtes d’hydres pensantes, à savoir De Rais (guitares, basse, chant) et Necroshadow (batterie), a bien connu des galères avant de nous cracher leurs travaux musicaux : une première démo Songs of Battle en 2001 suivie d’une longue traversée du désert avant de se voir offrir une signature chez le sérieux label allemand Undercover Records en 2005. Cette année là vit d’ailleurs la création de leur premier véritable album Valley of Darkness. Nocthule est donc leur second opus. FUNERARIUM, comme son patronyme nous l’indique, ne pratique pas de Doom dépressif mais au contraire un Black Metal minimaliste, cru et sauvagement vif.
Disposant de manière délibérée d’un son old-school, primaire et rêche tel qu’on l’aime sur ce genre de disque, une aura sonore se rapprochant des premiers efforts de DARKTHRONE et de leur sacro-sainte doublette Under A Funeral Moon ou Transilvanian Hunger se dégage de cette galette putride.
Autant dire que du lourd et FUNERARIUM s’en sort pas mal avec un «Riders of The Storm» ou le duo funèbre nous crache sa haine de l’humain. Le festival est lancé avec ce titre glacé et dépourvu de cœur, à la limite suffocant. La terrifiante «Nocthule» continue le travail de sape, FUNERARIUM tentant de nous saper le moral de ses riffs cadavériques et périmés. C’est chose réussie pour le moment. Une ode Black Metal nous rappelant les glorieuses heures des années 90. Ah le bon vieux temps du Black Metal underground se jouant dans les caves. Bestiaux, De Rais et Necroshadow n’en finisse pas de nous épouvanter de leurs riffs chétifs et cradingues comme sur la trippante «Journey Through the Desolated Landscapes» où FUNERARIUM se fait le chantre de la désolation. Sans aucune espérance, le message des luxembourgeois n’a pas de mal à passer. Les noces funèbres sont encore de passage avec la désincarnée et véloce «The Parable of the Blind Leading the Weak» tandis que le titre suivant «In the Streams of Melancholy» à l’ambiance plus Punk rock dénote un peu de l’ensemble mais démontre malgré tout de beaux moments de riffs.
Alors certes, on ne trouvera pas grand-chose de nouveau mais FUNERARIUM signe là un très bon album de Black Metal old-school comme on aimerait en entendre plus. Pas besoin de grosse production ni de branlette de manche, FUNERARIUM compose là sept titres de très bonne facture qui ne peuvent annoncer que de bonnes choses pour la suite. Enfin, doit-on vraiment leur souhaiter de bonnes choses…
