Après Seven Seals, qui a vu PRIMAL FEAR explorer partiellement de nouveaux horizons musicaux, la signature du Metal Commando chez le label Frontiers suscite bien des interrogations. Ce label italien étant spécialisé dans le hard mélodique voire FM, que vient y faire un combo comme PRIMAL FEAR, ardent défenseur de la cause Heavy Metal ? Le combo germanique va-t-il tenter de concurrencer PINK CREAM 69, WINGER ou GREAT WHITE ? Après cinq albums forgés dans le fer et une transition plutôt bancale (Seven Seals), PRIMAL FEAR est-il encore capable de porter haut l'étendard du Metal, ou choisit-il de définitivement adoucir le ton ?
Si, pour la deuxième fois, Tom Naumann quitte le groupe (il est surtout viré pour cause de démotivation), la présence à la six-cordes (sur deux titres) du suédois Magnus Karlsson justifierait la deuxième solution. Le bonhomme compose en effet pour bons nombres d'albums sortis chez Frontiers, entre autres Bob Catley (MAGNUM), STARBREAKER ou les deux ALLEN/LANDE. Mais depuis quelques temps déjà, la démarche de PRIMAL FEAR se veut plus réfléchie, et on constate que cette volonté de divertir sa musique porte ses fruits. En fait, PRIMAL FEAR, avec New Religion, démontre qu'il est tout à fait à l'aise sur les deux terrains : Metal lourd d'un côté, Metal mélodique de l'autre. Les éléments déjà introduits sur Seven Seals n'ont surtout pas été mis de côté, on retrouve par ci par là des claviers bien utilisés et autres orchestrations appropriées. Le disque débute par un prévisible "Sign Of Fear", mais dès "Face The Emptiness", la barre est placée plus haut, et PRIMAL FEAR retrouve une dynamique métallique qu'on avait cru disparue sur Seven Seals. D'ailleurs, à l'écoute du puissant "World On Fire", nul doute que PRIMAL FEAR a retrouvé la formule pour composer des hymnes de Metal comme on les aime.
A l'instar d'un KAMELOT, le quintet se prend au jeu des duos et fait appel à Simone Simons (EPICA) pour interpréter une Power-ballade riche en émotions, intitulée "Everytime It Rains" où les voix de Simone et Ralf Scheepers se complètent idéalement. Vraiment pas mal ! La facette progressive développée sur l'opus précédent donne ici naissance aux réussis "Fighting The Darkness" (développé en trois actes) et "The Man". L'occasion aussi pour Scheepers de rappeler qu'il appartient à la catégorie des grands chanteurs ! Randy Black a bien trouvé ses marques à la batterie (quel musicien !), la paire de gratteux Stefan Leibing / Henny Wolter (de retour) n'est pas en reste et nous gratifie de duels toujours aussi savoureux pour tout amateur de Heavy Metal qui se respecte. Pourtant, une page se tourne, puisque à la sortie de ce disque, l'attachant Stefan Leibing décide de quitter PRIMAL FEAR au grand détriment des fans du combo. Sans grande surprise, c'est Magnus Karlsson qui héritera du poste...
New Religion représente dans la discographie du Metal Commando son opus le plus sous-estimé.
Il ne manque pourtant pas de qualités, et fait office de synthèse plus que convaincante.
