Ce n'est peut-être pas un coup d'essai mais c'est en tout cas un coup de maître. Pour son premier album la formation californienne SLAVIOR frappe fort et, qui plus est, là où on ne l'attendait pas. En dépit d'un background musical très marqué Metal Progressif pour le batteur et leader Mark Zonder, et très Heavy Metal pour le guitariste Wayne Findlay, le groupe délivre un Heavy Rock teinté d'influences diverses, du Jazz à la musique tribale. Cela, on le doit, sans doute, aux multiples influences apportées par l'excellent chanteur Gregg Analla dont la voix puissante et groovy embrasse avec la même aisance tous les genres musicaux.
En fait, SLAVIOR est la réunion de trois musiciens extrêmement compétents et novateurs dans leur domaine et d'une méthode de composition assez inhabituelle. Les morceaux sont bâtis et pensés autour de la partition de batterie de Mark Zonder qui leur donne rythme et cohérence. S'ajoutent à cela la voix entrainante de Gregg Analla et la guitare du compositeur et homme à tout-faire du groupe Wayne Findlay. Le résultat est assez étonnant mais jamais déroutant; le groupe maîtrise parfaitement ce qu'il fait et les compositions, quoiqu'inhabituelles, ne sont jamais décousues.
Si Slavior est le premier album du groupe, la maturité, la qualité et la recherche qui s'en dégagent indiquent clairement que les trois hommes n'en sont pas à leur coup d'essai, notamment pour Mark Zonder dont la carrière commence à se chiffrer en décennies...
Pour ce qui est des titres, ils sont assez différents les uns des autres mais ont tous en commun d'être entraînants voire addicitfs, on pense au refrain entêtant de « Dove »: « I will be with yooooooou dove, until the day that you die ».
On reproche parfois à certains groupes de ne pas se renouveler, SLAVIOR, qui n'en est qu'à son premier album renouvelle son style à chaque morceau. Le plus intéressant, c'est que de la bouche même de Mark Zonder, le trio est encore loin d'être à court d'idée. J'ai envie de dire tant mieux parce qu'avec un premier album comme ça, des idées il leur en faudra pour faire aussi bien la prochaine fois!
