VIRGIN STEELE n'a jamais brillé par la qualité de ses pochettes et force est de constater que celle-ci est particulièrement laide, d'autant que le lien entre le cheval (poney ?) et le personnage de Lilith, au cœur de ce concept album, n'est pas des plus évidents. Dommage car le Power Metal du groupe reste de très bonne facture.
Chez VIRGIN STEELE, l'élément symphonique et mélodique prédomine et les compositions passent rarement sous la barre des 6 minutes. C'est dire que cette musique s'adresse aux métalleux qui aiment sortir les briquets en concert ou regarder les couchers de soleil. Cela est d'autant plus vrai pour ce Visions Of Eden qui, malgré l'introduction trompeuse de « Immortal I Stand » contient peu de morceaux épiques sur fond de batterie et guitare au galop (pour le coup, la pochette a plus de sens : on est loin du cliché pur sang / étalon). La double pédale, vraisemblablement trigguée, en apparaît même quelques fois superflue (« Adorned With The Rising Cobra ») ; et si dans l'ensemble, VIRGIN STEELE délivre un Power Metal qui le rapproche de MANOWAR, l'autre pionnier américain du genre, ou encore de BLIND GUARDIAN (« The Hidden God »), celui-ci sait aussi nous concocter des ballades émouvantes (« God Above God »), type Rock FM à la AEROSMITH.
A proposer des titres à rallonge, le combo n'évite cependant pas certains écueils du genre et nous délivre parfois un Prog un peu pompeux (« The Ineffable Name ») ; de même, l'utilisation des claviers n'est pas toujours des plus réussies (« Adorned With The Rising Cobra ») alors qu'ils se révèlent plus judicieux lorsqu'ils arborent des sonorités peplum (« Angel Of Death »).
La qualité du travail de composition qu'est le chanteur et conteur David DeFeis n'en reste pas moins indéniable et sa voix apporte une dose d'humanité et de sensibilité qui rime avec sincérité. Et ça, ça se respecte.
