De peur de ne plus séduire le public Metal qui se disperse sans cesse et se tourne vers de nouveaux groupes ayant, eux aussi, joué la carte de la provocation outrancière, KISS doit réagir. Or il ne reste plus désormais que deux membres originaux. Pour créer la surprise, le groupe prend une décision majeure : bas les masques ! Le groupe se présentera donc démaquillé, ce qui explique la banalité effarante de la pochette.
Pour le contenu, le groupe n’est pas au mieux de son inspiration et il faut reconnaître que l’on est bien loin de la grande époque du groupe. Pourtant cet album recèle quelques perles qui valent le détour : si la rengaine lassante de “Lick It Up” n’est pas totalement concluante, elle obtiendra tout de même une belle place dans les divers hit-parades européens (même en France !). “And On The 8th Day (God Created Rock And Roll)” est plus convaincante et conforme à l’image que les fans se font du groupe. La tentative de “rap” de Paul Stanley sur “All Hell’s Breaking Loose” ne restera pas dans les mémoires. Quant à “Not For The Innocent”, il est l’un des titres les plus injustement méconnu de leur discographie. Le reste est plus Heavy qu’auparavant.
