Il y aura bientôt suffisamment de groupes Stoner en France pour ne plus avoir à systématiquement évaluer leur musique à l'aune des formations américaines.
On pourrait commencer avec COFFIN ON TYRES, car le combo développe une sonorité si personnelle et inédite dans son dernier album, Erase qu'il mérite mieux qu'une comparaison avec le travail des pionniers du Stoner Rock.
Il a fallu quatre années au gang pour donner un petit frère à son premier méfait, Red.
Le temps de la maturation nécessaire à COFFIN ON TYRES pour s'émanciper. Si Red était un bon premier album plein de pêche, de hargne et de bonnes vibrations l'influence de ses modèles était palpable. Elle transpirait même de certains morceaux comme “Obstructed” ou “Red”.
Le combo a pris du recul et de la maturité. Erase est un skeud où les influences sont plus fondues dans la masse. COFFIN ON TYRES emprunte des sonorités au Desert Rock et au Stoner East Coast pour développer sa propre palette artistique.
Erase est un album tout en tension. La tracklist, qui ne laisse jamais tomber la pression, repose sur trois têtes de pont.
"Your affection" en ouverture, un morceau qui distille tous les ingrédients du son du gang: rythmique bien grasse sur lequel les riff agressifs des guitares taillent un couloir pour la voix puissante de Geoffrey Codant (lead vocals). Il ouvre les hostilités avec un puissant hurlement de bête blessée avant de poursuivre avec un chant tantôt rauque et cassé, tantôt chaud et grave.
"Upcoming battle", à mi-parcours est le morceau le plus tonique d'un album qui ne manque pourtant pas de répondant avec un beau dialogue de guitares et un morceau Heavy qui explose à mi-parcours dans une brutale accélération du tempo, un riff Speed repris en choeur par la batterie et tout le combo... magistral. Le morceau qui donne la patate.
"Leeches", la dernière piste, est un long épilogue Prog de 15 minutes sur lequel Geoff intervient dans un Sprechgesang susurré et inquiétant, comme un souffle pour ne pas polluer un morceau essentiellement instrumental.
Le reste de la tracklist n'est pas en reste. Il n'y a rien à jeter dans ces neufs pistes, toutes généreusement pourvues en riff pêchus, soli géniaux, chant habité et rythmique grasse.
Il est un peu tôt dans la carrière du groupe pour dire si Erase est l'album de la maturité mais il est certain que ce skeud fera date. Pour COFFIN ON TYRES et pour le Stoner français en général.
