Richie Kotzen revient avec ce Get Up plus dynamique et, disons-le franchement, beaucoup moins chiant que le précédent. Ici, au moins, on peut parler de Hard Rock, même si le ton reste tempéré.
Comme d’habitude, cet album est une œuvre personnelle puisqu’il joue de chaque instrument sans aucune aide extérieure et qu’il en assure également la production.
Les compos sont résolument tournées vers le passé, avec un son old school qui fait souvent penser à Hendrix. Contrairement aux albums précédents qui empruntaient (sans convaincre) différentes orientations musicales, celui-ci est plus cohérent et prend sa source dans le Rock des années 70 et les débuts du Hard Rock teinté de Blues. Seule incartade : les ballades et surtout “Special” qui pourrait être un hommage à la Motown, n’a vraiment rien à faire ici. Le titre est mou à souhait et ne s’inscrit pas dans la logique du reste (on ne se refait pas !).
En dépit de ses immenses compétences techniques, Richie Kotzen n’a jamais été un génie de la composition et l’on attend toujours un morceau qui pourrait le faire sortir du lot. Ce n’est pas sur cet album qu’on le trouvera, toutefois on s’en rapproche : “Such A Shame” et “Losin’ My Mind”, avec leur refrain qui se retient immédiatement, s’apparentent à des single en puissance.
Coté solos, même si la technique prend le pas sur l’émotion, c’est impeccable, comme toujours.
