C’est parfois paradoxal, la vie. Hier, Mitch Lucker, vocaliste émérite de SUICIDE SILENCE faisait encore partie de l’actualité. Aujourd’hui, il est relégué au passé. Et le hasard a voulu qu’en ce lendemain de Toussaint, je tombe sur cette entité fantomatique qu’est FOUR SEASONS OF PLAGUE, qui compte dans ses rangs un chanteur dont le registre criard évoque fortement le récent défunt. Plus étrange encore, le seul et unique effort de ce groupe étatsunien s’appelle Ocean Funeral, une dénomination macabre plutôt malvenue en ce jour de deuil national pour le Deathcore. Je ne pense pas que leur but était de faire un quelconque éloge funèbre en pondant cette sortie, il y a de ça deux ans. Mais les faits sont ce qu’ils sont, et peut-être que la nostalgie d’un vocaliste talentueux bien qu’énervant rendront cet EP un peu plus solennel qu’il ne l’est déjà.
FOUR SEASONS OF PLAGUE, c’est un poisson perdu au milieu d’un banc dans l’univers du Deathcore. Ils se ressemblent tous, nagent dans la même direction, ont le même goût. Seulement voilà, ce genre de Deathcore, ça se consomme sans faim. Celui-là est digne de finir dans la bouche d’épicuriens, car il est aussi savoureux que bien apprêté. Et c’est là tout le talent d’un cuisinier capable de faire du Croustibat le plus fade un plat Robuchonesque. Il y a dans cette sortie une attraction, peut-être pas universelle mais en tout cas suffisamment forte pour nous coller au mur. Le riffing est précis, dithyrambique, d’une grande fluidité et capable de surprenants schémas techniques, comme sur l’excellente « Sirens », surement le meilleur morceau de cet Ocean Funeral, qui dépasse largement tout ce qu’on y trouve d’autre. J’ai aimé l’approche progressive discrète de ce Deathcore. Ça ne saute pas forcément aux oreilles, mais c’est suffisamment alambiqué et finement interprété pour qu’on se dise « tiens, ceux-là ont un truc en plus ». J’en veux pour preuve le final épique et très mélodique de la composition précitée, qui fait véritablement des ravages. Dommage qu’on y trouve également une tentative de chant clair totalement foirée et archi-fausse, heureusement étouffée par une production maladroite. Figure également au sein de cette rondelle une rivalité entre des passages très atmosphériques et d’autres, plus violents, plus concis (« Slave To A Cannibal God »). Ainsi, cette belle diversité rythmique étoffe un EP qui n’avait pas besoin de plus pour se démarquer. FOUR SEASONS OF PLAGUE possède de l’énergie, de l’application et ce côté séducteur qui, il faut bien le reconnaître, charme l’auditeur. Comme si ces mecs avaient pour unique motivation d’offrir à leur public un Deathcore charnu, sensuel et même un peu putassier. Peu importe. Il y a tellement de groupes bourrés de lieux communs, qui enchainent bêtement blasts et breakdowns que d’en trouver un à la texture plus légère et plus « musicale » ne fait pas de mal. Les 17 minutes d’Ocean Funeral se dévorent en une bouchée et les appels incessants de leur vocaliste, qui je vous le disais, est une bonne copie de Mitch Lucker dans ses screams, incitent à aller se resservir. Le seul vrai bémol concernera finalement l’utilisation éparse d’un chant clair totalement indécent et désagréable, qui gâche l’appréciation qu’on peut avoir d’excellents solos.
Je vous avoue quand dans ma récente lubie, qui consiste à revisiter quelques albums de Deathcore anonymes sortis aux alentours de l’année 2010, avoir découvert FOUR SEASONS OF PLAGUE demeure jusqu’à présent une de mes plus grandes satisfactions. Assurément, la générosité et le potentiel artistique dont font preuve ces ricains m’encouragent à suivre de plus près leur évolution, si évolution il y a. Parce que Ocean Funeral, c’est comme un petit goût de Noël avant heure.
