Le gros problème avec Alice Cooper, c’est qu’à chaque nouvel album, j’espère entendre un Trash II ou la suite de Hey Stoopid. Pour beaucoup d’entre nous, pour les plus anciens va-t-on dire, sans vouloir vexer personne, Alice c’est School’s Out (1972) et Welcome To My Nightmare (1975). Pour ma part, l’initiation au monde de Vincent Furnier (son vrai nom …) m’a été faite lors de sa période la plus Hard FM, lorsque Desmond Child lui permit de retrouver les sommets, à grands coups de « Dangerous Tonight », « House Of Fire », « Bed Of Nails », « Poison » et autres « Feed My Frankenstein ».
Alors forcément, au moment d’insérer cette nouvelle galette, Along Came A Spider, dans le lecteur, vais-je à nouveau prendre en pleine gueule ce Hard Rock accrocheur qui a marqué mon adolescence ?
Il y a quelques années, une seule écoute m’aurait suffit à dresser un constat sévère et sans nuance : ce n’est pas le Alice que j’aime, bordel !! Où est le gros son de guitare ? Je ne le retrouve que sur le groovy « Vengeance Is Mine », et bizarrement (hum …) il s’agit du titre où Saul Hudson, enfin Slash pour tout vous dire, vient faire sonner sa Gibson Les Paul sur un bon gros Marshall …
Mais bon, je n’ai plus 15 ans et passée ma déception primaire, j’ai quand même trouvé des choses intéressantes à ce Along Came A Spider. Il y règne comme une sorte de retour au source pour Alice, vers un Rock plus simple, moins produit et tout autant contrasté avec la teneur des textes du sieur Furnier.
En dépit d’une démarche honnête, il en résulte toutefois quelques ratés, comme ce titre d’ouverture « I Know Where You Live », qui sonne comme du punk gentillet à peine électrique avec ses « claps claps » de pacotille.
A l’inverse, le très bon « Catch Me If You Can » et ce « Wrapped In Silk » digne d’AC/DC (ces riffs vintage et sa basse ronflante) présentent Alice sous un visage bien plus convaincant. Ça sent même un peu – un peu beaucoup – l’influence des 4 gars de Liverpool sur « Killed By Love ». Et sur « Salvation », on nage en plein Rock psychédélique, que les nostalgiques de Woodstock ne manqueront pas d’apprécier.
A noter que sur « Wake The Dead », c’est un certain John Osbourne qui officie à l’harmonica …
Peut être que je délire, mais Along Came A Spider m’a aussi évoqué l’univers de David Bowie.
Je ne peux pas vous cacher que je préfère entendre Alice Cooper chanter « The Toy Master » sur le dernier AVANTASIA.
Ce 25ème album studio d’Alice Cooper séduira, avec un peu de chance, ses tout premiers fans.
Moi je vais aller m’écouter « Hey Stoopid » ...
