CHROME HOOF a été formé en 2007 par Leo Smee, bassiste de CATHEDRAL, et son frère. Leur discographie est particulièrement pauvre et les fans n’auront pas vraiment l’occasion de se réjouir de cette nouvelle sortie puisqu’elle ne contient que 3 titres.
CHROME HOOF est une sorte de défouloir dans lequel le groupe lâche tout, nous balances des tas de trucs aux oreilles. Ce genre d’expérimentations ça a du bon, mais à condition que cela serve de fondation à quelque chose de mature, de solide. Ici, on a plutôt l’impression que le groupe nous livre ses essais, ses expériences diverses et qu’il se fout bien de la cohérence de l’ensemble – ou du fait que ça puisse être royalement chiant. Donc, au final, oui, c’est royalement chiant. Comme quoi il y a une logique.
Tout commence avec « Krunching Down » dont l’intro au triangle dure tout de même 40 secondes. Elle est suivie d’un phrasé unique, façon deux-tons de police qui va durer un bon bout de temps avant que des hurlements Grind ne surgissent sans qu’on sache trop pourquoi.
« Year Ram » est un instrumental assez classique de Stoner/Doom, donc lent et lourd à souhait. C’est nettement plus audible mais ça ne présente pas un grand intérêt. Sauf que le morceau est coupé en deux, la seconde moitié étant beaucoup plus psychédélique. Il faudra tenir 8 minutes.
Et on termine avec « Mad Air Punch » qui débute par 2 minutes de Bontempi avant d’enchaîner sur un air où l’on hésite entre guinguette de la Marne et moyen-âge ! Ensuite on passe au Jazz, puis à l’inévitable passage parlé avant de retrouver le Bontempi. Inutile de dire qu’avec tout ce bordel on a décroché depuis longtemps car, j’avais oublié de préciser que ça dure 17 minutes.
Et, en prime, un magnifique « morceau caché » qui aurait dû le rester. On n’en demandait pas tant.
Si on ajoute que l’artwork est hideux…
C’est toujours la même chose, on ne va pas empêcher certains « connaisseurs » de trouver ça admiraaaaable, après tout, si ça leur fait du bien. Mais bon, soyons honnête, c’est sacrément chiant et, question création artistique, c’est con qu’un certain Frank Zappa ait fait ça 25 ans plus tôt… en mieux.
