DIO (usa) - Holy Diver Live (2006)

DIO revint avec un nouveau live qui a la particularité de présenter le mythique Holy Diver dans son intégralité et dans l’ordre de l’album. Le second CD, lui, reprend quelques uns des meilleurs morceaux de DIO, BLACK SABBATH et RAINBOW.
Hélas, des défauts importants apparaissent dès les premières minutes d’écoute. Le principal problème vient du maître de cérémonie lui même : Dio n’a pas son timbre de voix habituel, sans doute est-il fatigué par la tournée, sa voix est plus grave, moins puissante et surtout moins envoûtante que d’habitude.
Par ailleurs, le rythme du concert est assez particulier : un solo de batterie surgit dès le troisième morceau. La pression retombe donc brutalement à cause de cette démonstration technique qui ne ravira pas grand monde, excepté les batteurs. On peut faire le même reproche à Doug Aldrich dont le solo envahit “Shame on The Night”. Certes sa technique et sa vitesse d’exécution sont assez étonnant, cependant il se livre à l’exercice typique du guitar heroe de seconde catégorie des années 80 : des solos interminables, très classiques et ultra démonstratifs. Tout ce manège nous prive de près d’un quart d’heure de chansons. Ainsi aurait-on préféré entendre “Egypt (The Chains Are On)”.
On a également l’impression que Dio se contente de faire son boulot et qu’il tourne au rythme de croisière. Il nous ressort toujours les mêmes gimmicks. “Heaven And Hell” est presque semblable à la version du Live Evil et à ce que Dio fait sur scène depuis 20 ans. Alors, il est vrai que tout cela est parfaitement exécuté et qu’il n’y a rien à en dire, mais les habitués du lutin pourront y voir un léger manque de spontanéité.
Pour le reste, avouons tout de même que ce live nous procure un certain plaisir vu qu’il renferme une bonne quantité de titres de qualité que l’on n’avait jamais entendu en live. En outre Dio s’est entouré de vieux cadors qui connaissent la musique : Rudy Sarzo (basse), Simon Wright (batterie), Doug Aldrich (guitare) et Scott Warren (claviers).
Holy Diver Live est donc un album convenable mais qui n’est pas à la hauteur de la performance de DIO en concert.
Une version DVD accompagne cette sortie.
