On ne badine pas avec l’amour. Et encore moins avec GOATWHORE. Plus radicaux que les ricains, tu meurs ! Et pour cause, ça fait une bonne quinzaine d’années mine de rien que le quatuor (qui n’en a pas toujours été un) écume la scène US, répandant la mauvaise herbe comme selon eux, la bonne parole gangrène les pensées. Du haut de leur cinquième album studio, les Néo-Orléanais ne donnent pas franchement l’impression de lever le pied. Mieux encore, GOATWHORE semble avoir franchi un cap, à la fois dans la maturité de son Black/Death volcanique, mais également niveau technicité, puisque Blood For The Master se montre bien plus à son avantage sur ce point que ses prédécesseurs.
Au cœur d’une scène en perpétuelle ébullition, les ricains font déjà office de vétérans. Et à entendre leur travail, ils en jouent pas mal. Cet alliage corrosif, qui abat d’un coup de hache toutes les barrières stylistiques et pourrait facilement ne faire qu’un avec le terme « Metal » tant il est pur, ne souffre d’aucune contestation de supériorité. Ces musiciens ont de l’expérience et étalent une fois de plus tout leur savoir-faire. Cette pièce de viande n’est pas bardée, pas ficelée, pas assaisonnée, pas dénervée. Elle est brute et sanguinolente, comme aime les servir GOATWHORE. Au concours Top Chef, eux ne passeraient pas la première épreuve. Manque de finesse. Mais c’est justement quand la musique n’a besoin d’aucun raffinage qu’elle est la plus efficace. Mélange habile de Death, de Black et de Thrash, tourné sous une forme vraiment malsaine, Blood For The Master met un point d’orgue à faire honneur au Metal avec un grand M ! Bien entendu, les américains continuent dans le blasphème et le visuel antichrétien bon marché, poussant le vice à taper entièrement dans le Black comme sur « Judgement Of The Bleeding Crown ». Mais c’est une grossière entourloupe, car aussi massif qu’il soit, cet album navigue entre plusieurs eaux. La guitare lead fait dans le Black, le tempo général fait dans le Thrash, l’intensité fait dans le Death et les vocaux sont neutres. De quoi être foutrement désorientés. Pourtant, on a l’impression de connaître GOATWHORE depuis toujours. On a l’impression que cet opus a déjà été entendu maintes fois. Et pourtant, il possède en son sein quelque chose d’inexplicablement magnétique. Un feeling très puissant qui vous scotche sur votre siège, qui vous hypnotise, qui vous dompte. Alors on se rappelle que c’était pareil sur Carving Out The Eyes Of God et qu’au fond, la tambouille de nos amis n’a pas pris une ride. Sauf qu’avec le temps qui passe, GOATWHORE est parvenu à affiner son jeu, tout en le gardant antipathique à la première écoute. J’ai simplement peur que comme chaque nouvel album, Blood For The Master ne s’écoute sans déplaisir et ne retombe alors dans l’oubli. Car il apparaît évident que GOATWHORE n’a jamais réussi, et ne réussira probablement jamais à pondre des œuvres qui soient cultes. Celle-ci ne déroge pas à la règle.
Mais au fond, on s’en balance. Une fois de plus, les américains font ce qu’ils savent faire de mieux, avec comme toujours, une amélioration progressive mais néanmoins perceptible. Et si c’était simplement pour le plaisir de renouer avec un vrai bon album de Metal pur jus qu’on se jetait sur Blood For The Master ? Si on choisissait d’oublier que GOATWHORE est nul en créativité, pitoyable en originalité, lamentable en inventivité ? Si on leur laissait simplement le bénéfice du gros son qui tâche ? Ce serait un retour à l’essentiel et ce ne serait pas pire que maintenant.
