NEVERMORE pour moi, fait partie de ces groupes dont on sait qu’ils existent, qu’ils sont reconnus internationalement et donc talentueux, mais dont on n’a jamais vraiment écouté le travail. Alors quelle meilleure occasion que The Obsidian Conspiracy pour réparer cette injustice et offrir enfin, une chance à ce combo américain ? Il faut dire qu’il y a des noms qui vous accrochent l’oreille rien qu’à leur simple prononciation et que NEVERMORE n’en fait pas vraiment partie. Pour leur armada de fans, l’attente aura été longue. Cinq ans depuis This Godless Endeavor, seul un misérable CD/DVD live sera venu égayer leur quotidien en attendant ce septième album studio qui ouvre logiquement la porte à de nouvelles perspectives pour le quatuor de Seattle.
Musicalement, je savais plus ou moins à quoi m’attendre. NEVERMORE ne s’étant jamais approprié un style précis, naviguant du Power au Death en passant par le Thrash et s’attribuant ces qualificatifs ambigus que sont « progressif » ou « atmosphérique », je pensais déjà être en présence d’une de ces formations trop complexes à décortiquer pour mon petit cerveau. Mais quelle belle surprise que « The Termination Proclamation » qui déambule à toute blinde sur des parties de guitares extrêmement techniques et une cadence folle ! C’est précisément sur ce titre que la beauté de la voix lyrique de Warrel Dane me toucha en plein cœur. Déjouant tous les pronostics, le bonhomme déploie ses plus beaux atouts vocaux sous nos tympans ébahis. Mêlant avec classe voix grave, inquiétante avec une ligne de chant avant-gardiste, Warrel aurait bien sa place sur le casting d’un opéra de Broadway. La guitare lead tenue par Jeff Loomis se lance à tous les coups dans de magnifiques solis qui aboutissent à des chevauchées mélodiques épiques. La nostalgique « Emptiness Unobstructed » et son refrain transcendant est bien partie pour tourner en boucle sur mon iPod. C’est exactement le style de composition, en service chaud/froid avec couplets romantiques et ritournelle puissante qui me berce et me fait à chaque fois mentir quand j’affirme haut et fort n’avoir aucun faible pour le Metal Progressif. Et derrière ces courtes tueries résonnent bien souvent des créations apaisantes qui trompent leur mari Thrash/Death avec la fille de joie Heavy/Doom (« The Blue Marble And The New Soul » et « She Comes In Colors » pour ne pas les citer). Cet équilibre fragile entre chansons burnées et passages à la triste pureté fait tout l’intérêt de The Obsidian Conspiracy. Dans le grandiloquent, NEVERMORE a trouvé sa voie et pourrait même se lancer dans la composition de bandes-originales puisqu’une plage telle que « The Day You Built The Wall », grâce à sa mise en scène haute en couleurs, concurrencerait presque messieurs Badelt ou Zimmer pour le césar de la meilleure performance catégorie « musique de film ». Les américains, pendant presque une heure, parviennent à capter notre attention et prendre en otage l’auditeur dans un monde alambiqué et stellaire dont l’urgence n’est pas de s’en évader.
C’est au final une bien belle performance que cette sortie. Elle est d’autant plus belle qu’elle était simplement inattendue. Ce fut probablement son plus grand mérite, car placer des espoirs en un album est le meilleur moyen d’en être déçu. Alors pour avoir considéré cette œuvre sans apriori, je ne peux que féliciter le cru 2010 de NEVERMORE qui a infusé de toute sa noirceur dans mon âme.
