Jeff Scott Soto est un excellent chanteur, peut-être même l’un des meilleurs, pourtant j’étais un peu sceptique en recevant cet album (Live at the Gods). Parce que de Eyes à Takara, de JSS à Talisman en passant par Humanimal, notre homme n’a pas vraiment réussi à imposer ses groupes et on ne se souvient toujours de lui que comme “l’ex-chanteur de Malmsteen” !
Oui, je le confesse, je pensais écouter ce live d’une oreille distraite puis le ranger sur une étagère où il prendrait la poussière avec d’autres. Homme de peu de foi…
C’est un grand album.
Après s’être mis en voix, JSS nous assène d’un “Let Me Entertain You” qui donne le ton : on ne va pas s’ennuyer ! Puis il égrène un à un les tubes de sa longue carrière, délivrant une énergie vite communicative. Un son parfait, des harmoniques qui sifflent sur une rythmique plombée, une balance impeccable, tout est pensé pour nous procurer le plus de bonheur.
Mais nous ne sommes pas au bout de nos surprises car JSS aime varier les plaisir : après un show électrique vitaminé, il passe à l’acoustique et son talent ne faiblit pas d’un poil. L’enchaînement de titres très courts (1 minute environ) nous offrent une pause bienvenue sans jamais nous lasser.
Puis on revient aux choses sérieuses avec un medley tonitruant de l’époque Malmsteen “Don’t Let It End / On The Run Again / I Am A Viking / I’ll See The Light Tonight”. On remarquera au passage le talent de son guitariste, Howie Simon, très inspiré par le maître suédois sans être un simple clone.
Une balade enregistrée en studio complète ce live ; ce n’était pas indispensable, surtout après ce qu’on vient de vivre !
