Line-up
: Mattias Engström (guitare et chant), Daniel Grahn (guitare et chant), Carl-Johan Lindblad (batterie), Christian Öhberg (basse)

Discographie : The Wind-Up (Album - 2007)

Metal-Impact.

MI. The Wind-Up est un concept album.

Mattias. Dental Records a été fondé par Omer Akay from Cold Records and Daniel Strachal from Threeman Recordings. The Wind-Up jusqu'à maintenant.

==================== ENGLISH VERSION ====================

MEMFIS is a new Swedish band, playing Metalcore mixed with a lot of Progressive elements, and it is done for a nice cause : the protection of Satan... well no, of our environment... my apologize...

Line-up
: Mattias Engström (guitar and vocal), Daniel Grahn (guitar and vocal), Carl-Johan Lindblad (drums), Christian Öhberg (bass)

Discography : The Wind-Up (Album - 2007)

Metal-Impact. Could you present us the band?
Mattias. MEMFIS are a metal band from Sweden, founded in 2003. Our album ‘The wind-up’ were first released in Scandinavia, September 2006. The album received very good reviews and made its way to top 20 on the Swedish album charts. There’s also a 7” vinyl single out on Futhermocker Records.

MI. What's your musical background, your training?
Mattias. Well, concerning about myself, I’ve been playing guitar for about 12 years. I started on my own when I was 11 years old, and started to take instrument lessons in school for some time after. I have been studying music in high school too. CJ are the one in the band whose still are studying music.

MI. How did you get in touch with each others?
Mattias. MEMFIS started out in Kristinehamn (a small town with less than 25.000 inhabitants), by the original line-up. All who played music here knew each other, more or less. So it became natural for us four to start this band, since some of us already had played together in other constellations.

MI. What’s the meaning of MEMFIS? Is it a tribute to Memphis and the King Elvis?
Mattias. No, it has nothing to do with Memphis, Tennessee in the states. The name MEMFIS comes from the ancient city of Egypt, which is spelled with the “F” instead of “PH”. We wanted to pick a band name that doesn’t scream out what kind of music we’re playing. It gives us more room and possibilities to experiment with our sound.

MI. Can you tell us about the concept of the lyrics?
Mattias. The lyrics are mostly based on my thoughts and opinions about how we, the mankind, are hurting our planet. I think that we have to stop thinking about economy and profits and prior those more environment-friendly options instead.

MI. How do you compose an album? Who comes with the ideas first?
Mattias. I use to compose on the computer with the guitar in my lap when I feel inspired. Some periods I work on a song a couple of days and it's done by the end of the week. But often I need to take a break from a half finished song and continue when I feel inspired again. Details and arrangements are important, not just the riffs.
Almost every song on the album are composed at home before I brought them to the rehearsals.

MI. What are your main musical influences?
Mattias. I’m listening to all kinds of exciting music, but most of my records consist of rock bands and such constellations. I’m into bands like MASTODON, THE MARS VOLTA, ISIS and TOOL.

MI. There are so many bands coming from Sweden. As a new band, is it rather a curse or a blessing?
Mattias. Yes there's a lot of Metal bands in Sweden, and I think there's a lot of metal bands around today overall. The scene is starting to get watered down with all these bands who follow trends. I don’t want to say that our music is totally new and amazing, but I think we have a good collection of songs and the main thing is to do heavy, fresh thinking and straight forward rock music.

MI. You’ve played live lately outside Sweden, in England. How was the audience there? Do you like being on stage? Will you tour in France?
Mattias. It was cool, and it was really fun to play outside Scandinavia. The response have been very good so far and it’s always exciting to play live. I hope that we can start tour in France soon, and the rest of Europe as well. That would be awesome!

MI. You’ve been signed on Dental Records. Can you tell us more about this new Swedish label?
Mattias. Dental Records are a new label founded by Omer Akay from Cold Records and Daniel Strachal from Threeman Recordings. Dental have also released albums with HEARSE and BIRDFLESH. I think that their promotion for The Wind-Up has been good so far. And I know that they prior MEMFIS very high on the label.

MI. Your cover art seems more influenced by your progressive elements than by the metalcore influence? Is this the image of the band you want to promote?
Mattias. Yes, we wanted a cover that could make people wonder "what is this?". We’re not into those dark typical metal artworks with demons and blood splatter all over it. I think the artwork suits very good with the albums concept and our music as well.

MI. To conclude, if you have a message to send, please proceed.
Mattias. I hope that the metal heads of France give MEMFIS a listen, check out some of our songs in our website.
