Eh toi ! Oui toi, le geek qui lit avec assiduité nos colonnes. Arrête-toi un instant. GRAVES OF NOSGOTH te parle. Ta copine est assez barge pour tenir un stand à la Japan Expo et toi, tu la supportes dans ses choix vestimentaires ? Vous passez vos soirées devant World Of Warcraft, habillés comme des loques et maquillés comme des voitures volées ? Intéressant. Alors peut-être que Ex Tenebris Ad Lucem te plaira. De toute façon, tu es bien trop cultivé en matière de jeux-vidéo pour que ce groupe puisse t’échapper. Tu auras vite fait de remarquer que leur nom de scène est une référence à Nosgoth, le monde virtuel créé pour les besoins du jeu Legacy Of Kain. Et dès lors, tu porteras une oreille attentive à cette œuvre. GRAVES OF NOSGOTH, ce sont quatre apollons Italiens qui ont les pieds cimentés dans un délire Death / Gothic Metal à tendance romantico-vampirique. Et si vous avez le teint cadavérique avec des lentilles d’un bleu surnaturel, c’est encore mieux.
Mais entre vous et moi, que peut-on attendre d’un groupe qui remercie dans le booklet « son tendre lapin Kyle, son chat noir, sa tortue Caravaggio et son téléphone mobile » ? Soyons sérieux un instant. Et ce premier album est exactement à l’image de ses géniteurs, très peu mature et très peu original. Pourtant, si les aprioris sont mauvais, ils seront vite éclipsés par un démarrage en fanfare. Ses contours inquiétants, ses dispositions romanesques et sa relative intensité en feront une piste introductive plus que correcte. Harmonisant un Death plutôt banal avec des arrangements et des mélodies gothiques, GRAVES OF NOSGOTH célèbre un mariage risqué. Mais force est de constater que ces premières minutes ne souffrent d’aucune contestation stylistique, la basse étant même surmixée sur « Shameless Mastery » pour donner encore plus de relief et d’abnégation à leur musique. Les premières perturbations arrivent sur « The Fallen Hope » et « Scarred Night » sous la forme de redondances. La première est une balade plutôt plate, trop samplée et mal chantée. Elle introduit d’ailleurs un gros coup de mou au cœur de cette œuvre puisque « The Damned Alchemy » sera un interlude à la détresse grotesque et que la demi-acoustique « Eternal Sunrise », en dépit d’un jeu de guitare sèche planant et brillant qui ferait presque bonne figure sur la bande-originale de Twilight, sera le point de chute des atmosphères glauques et oppressantes des débuts. Je ne vous cache pas que GRAVES OF NOSGOTH est un groupe à l’amateurisme flagrant, qui lutte avec ses armes et qui ne dispose pas de moyens mirobolants. Ils y mettent néanmoins de l’envie et si certaines chansons sont franchement hasardeuses, d’autres, comme « Dark Age In The Abyss », vous convaincront facilement parce que simples mais efficaces. Alors effectivement, se baser sur un trip gothico-dépressif n’est pas la meilleure idée du monde, mais la facette Death très agréable d’Ex Tenebris Ad Lucem relèvera sa saveur de manière assez improbable. Parfois on peste, parfois on accroche. L’album est assez inégal mais il est réussi dans sa globalité.
Clairement, ces Italiens ne sont pas de fins créateurs, ni même d’artistes accomplis. Mais ils ont une drôle de sensibilité dans leur Metal qui les rend presque sympathiques, et ce en dépit d’un premier essai pas mauvais mais encore tendre et tâtonnant. GRAVES OF NOSGOTH a clairement besoin de reconsidérer la chose et de passer sa bouillie au tamis afin d’en dissocier ses arômes les plus complexes. On en ressent certaines notes parfois mais ce ne sont que des effluves qui paraissent bien lointaines et dont on ne saurait se contenter.
