Même si vous l'attendiez avec une impatience non-feinte, je ne vais pas faire comme tout le monde et vous rabâcher le petit speech d'intro censé annoncer la couleur quant aux origines du nom KLOGR. Si la curiosité vous est insoutenable, vous pouvez néanmoins vous référer à ma chronique de leur premier album, Till You Decay, laquelle vous sera surement utile afin de comprendre les nuances qui se font jour sur ce Black Snow. Il vous faut savoir qu'on ne donnait pas cher de la peau de ces Italiens en 2011, et quand je dis "on", ce n'est pas seulement Metal-Impact, c'est aussi les médias d'ici et d'ailleurs, qui étaient plutôt pessimistes quant à un avenir plus brillant que terne. Mais à la force du poignet, armé d'une persuasion à toute épreuve, le charismatique Gabriele "Rusty" Rustichelli, tête pensante du groupe et accessoirement producteur chez Zeta Factory, aura su redresser une trajectoire qui n'allait pas dans la meilleure direction possible.
Car ce Rock / Metal alternatif découpé dans du carton, pour être franc, ne passionnait pas les foules. Ce sera peut-être différent ici, et si l'identité de KLOGR se retrouve ainsi lestée de nouveaux défauts, personne ne s'en plaindra vraiment. Black Snow a l'immense mérite d'"américaniser" jeu et son. La production est d'emblée plus complète, plus explosive, presque homogène, si ce n'est cette saturation récurrente et déplaisante. On découvre au quatuor une force de frappe qu'on ne lui connaissait guère. "Zero Tolerance" n'est pas le titre parfait pour commencer, mais son refrain percutant met l'accent là où il fallait, à tel point qu'on commence de suite à imaginer cet opus comme étant une machine à tubes. La suite des évènements ne va pas nous donner entièrement tort. Il y a peu de temps faibles, peu de compositions qui passent à la trappe, tout est méthodiquement enrubanné dans un dynamisme aux relents de Metal US. Les riffs tartinent, les rythmes balancent leur couenne entre un Metal groovy et un Rock alternatif assez subtil ("Refuge" ou "Guilty And Proud" qui fleure bon la renaissance récente de STAIND), quelques arrangements diffus soutiennent un enrobage moderne et d'intenables lignes mélodiques charment l'âme sensible. La combinaison n'est pas la plus imprévisible qui existe, et on se dit assez vite que KLOGR en fait des tonnes à l'endroit où un peu de candeur serait bienvenue, mais indiscutablement, il y a progression par rapport à Till You Decay. Enfin, ces Italiens accrochent l'oreille, désormais forts d'un Metal punchy et complet. Ma seule réserve concerne finalement, ironie du sort, celui par qui tout cela s'est décanté ; Rusty, ou plutôt son chant. Si vous avez du mal avec les timbres pleurnichards typiquement ritals style Marco Masini sur "Perchè Lo Fai", alors vous ne vous accommoderez pas facilement au chant clair poussif et typé de Gabriele Rustichelli. Les cris Hardcore qu'il arrache de son gosier sur "Life Is Real" ne font pas non plus fureur, et c'est frustrant de considérer sa prestation en particulier comme la moins pertinente des quatre...
Ceci étant, on peut avoir la banane. Et quand je dis "on", c'est seulement Metal-Impact. Avec Black Snow, chacun verra midi à sa porte. Pour notre part, excusez-nous d'apprécier les efforts consentis par ce groupe. Je ne cesserai jamais de renvoyer les esprits tourmentés par ces différents éloges vers les imperfections de Till You Decay, quasiment toutes gommées et corrigées, jamais amplifiées. Malheureusement, je constate aussi que KLOGR traine encore ce premier effort derrière lui comme un boulet, quitte à éclipser l'ultime compliment d'un papier dédié à cette semi-résurrection.
