Notons aussi : besogneux, accueillants, investis, alcooliques et autres joyeusetés. D'ailleurs, COLOSSUS est là pour rappeler à l'ordre tout contrevenant. La punition est d'une rudesse aussi totale que son exemplarité. Nous n'avons pas souvent l'occasion de parler de ce groupe nordiste et quand il s'agit de le faire, les mots ne se dépassent pas mutuellement. J'y vois à cela deux raisons. La première, c'est que COLOSSUS n'est pas une formation de petits rigolos et que ses thèmes, ses paroles, sa musique, ses visuels sont autant de bonnes raisons de garder son sérieux. La deuxième, bien plus terrible, c'est que Lobotocracy n'engendre pas, à cause de son contenu, de réactions disproportionnées. Tout juste a-t-on le temps de disséquer le contenu de ce second album que les plaies se referment comme par enchantement, nous empêchant d'identifier l'organe gangréné.
Il y a un mal profond qui ronge ce disque et qui sévit avec la discrétion d'un cancer. Pour ceux qui ont eu vent des efforts consentis sur Fragments en 2010 (lire par ailleurs), ils seront irrités, embêtés par le déroulement prévisible de cet opus. Les belles dispositions se sont muées en évènements génériques, le riff casse-gueule est devenu calcaire, l'étiquette Deathcore pèse le poids d'un boulet qu'on traine péniblement. Je ne vais pas évoquer très longtemps Lobotocracy sur sa forme, car il est flagrant que sa taille de guêpe répond aux critères de séduction. Production explosive, Deathcore percutant orienté Brutal Death, parfois Death technique ("Uninvited Guest"), parfois Grind, indigestion de voix (deux chanteurs au registre extrême), de blasts, avalanche de son, ce full-lenght a l'œillade facile. Mais de structurations en déstructurations, on a le sentiment que COLOSSUS s'amuse finalement à souffler sur un château de cartes qu'il aura mis des heures à construire. Difficile dans ces conditions de scinder ce qui est bien fait et ce qui est mal fait. Les changements se font à une vitesse prodigieuse, le tout étant constamment nimbé de cette brutalité technico-inoffensive qui fait pas mal de tort à cette phrase accrocheuse trouvée sur leur page Facebook rubrique biographie : "à aucun moment [le style ne prétend] rentrer dans un format standard". Au contraire, je crois qu'aujourd'hui, plus on s'essaie au Death Metal moléculaire, plus on rentre dans une petite boite formatée. COLOSSUS a beaucoup de respect pour ce style musical au sens institutionnel du terme, et c'est une des grandes qualités de Lobotocracy, mais il lui manque un fil conducteur qui relierait les morceaux entre eux, qui leur donnerait une continuité et qui gommerait ce cliché du souk où l'on te vend n'importe quelle babiole au prix d'un trésor antique.
Je suis un peu chagriné d'avoir à faire ce constat car j'aime bien les gens qui ont des convictions et que je croyais dur comme fer en cette marge de progression devinée après Fragments (j'y crois toujours, rassurez-vous), mais je me suis ennuyé ferme. Jamais, au-delà de sa bestialité flatteuse, de sa technicité hallucinante, de sa justesse musicale, Lobotocracy ne m'a procuré la petite émotion qui sépare l'album de Deathcore moyen de l'album de Deathcore intéressant. C'était la condition sine qua non, et à force d'essayer de me l'imaginer, j'en ai mal à la tête.
