Entre OESTRE et Metal-Impact, c’est plutôt une belle romance. Et elle dure encore aujourd’hui. Alors que les limougeauds ne vont pas tarder à fêter leur dixième anniversaire, nous, on continue de les suivre de près. Mais surtout, on continue de kiffer sa mère leur musique. Parce qu’après tout, on a un peu grandi ensemble. Et que c’est toujours attendrissant d’écouter l’évolution d’un groupe dans lequel on a tout de suite cru. On ne s’était pas trompé. Avec son second album studio intitulé Catharsis, OESTRE met le doigt sur un thème qui, j’en suis sûr, passionne un bon nombre d’entre nous ; les vertus cathartiques d’un disque de Metal sur nos humeurs respectives. Je laisserai volontiers l’analyse conceptuelle de cette notion aux spécialistes, afin de mieux vous répondre concernant le fond musical de cette œuvre. A tous les niveaux, chacun se fera son propre avis.
La première chose à dire de ce disque, c’est qu’il n’est vraiment pas pour toutes les bourses. Je comprends aisément ceux qui ont détesté, car ce Death est assez lunatique, pour ne pas dire carrément antipathique. OESTRE, dans ses structures, dans ses schémas, change d’avis toutes les 30 secondes. Accélérations, décélérations, tempos brisés et polyrythmie, les français font aussi dans le Metal algébrique. Impossible de lire entre les lignes, tant ces garçons quadrillent l’espace à grands coups de riffs piquants et de mélodies frénétiques. Pour rester chauvin, on pourrait faire un comparatif rapide avec GOJIRA, HACRIDE ou GOROD. Mais ce serait juste pour vous situer rapidement l’affaire. Dans une époque où la mode va bien souvent au Djent, OESTRE nous fait le plaisir de ne pas tomber dans le panneau et la facilité de repomper grossièrement sur TEXTURES, MESHUGGAH et autre PERIPHERY. Leur son est très atypique, très personnel bien qu’assez franchouillard. Les sonorités électroniques font la part belle aux envolées rageuses de Mickaël, qui livre une prestation solide derrière son micro. A certains moments, les musiciens semblent hésiter quant à la direction à donner à leurs créations. Soit c’est voulu, dans un subtil manège visant à déconcentrer l’auditeur, soit c’est très révélateur du freestyle total susceptible d’habiter leurs compos. Dans les deux cas, Catharsis opère dans une forme d’alchimie très volatile. Les lames dans le ventre sont immatérielles mais on ressent leur présence. Torturant les oreilles sans tomber dans le proxénétisme, ce disque est glacial comme de la tôle froissée. OESTRE, dans sa conception du Metal, est un groupe très pète-sec. Rares sont les concessions mais nombreux sont les arrangements. Parmi les plus marquants, il y a ces couches d’Electro très discrètes, qui s’immiscent péniblement entre deux plans en béton armé. Moins volubiles qu’ HUMATRONIC dans leur volonté de marier l’Homme et la Machine, les limougeauds tiennent cependant un discours cohérent et vont jusqu’au bout de leurs idées. Evidement, la modernité presque exubérante de nombreux passages sera un frein pour certains. J’en ai aussi fait partie avant de laisser cet album, décomplexé en tous points, faire son œuvre.
OESTRE n’a surement pas sorti le disque de l’année avec Catharsis. Mais il a sorti un disque qui porte bien son nom. Plus qu’un examen de conscience, cette rondelle fera assurément bouillir chacun dans son fort intérieur. Et si musicalement, le style se mord la queue, ces garçons sont suffisamment habiles pour minimiser ce petit accroc et maquiller certains boutons. Le résultat est très honnête.
