Comme beaucoup de groupes, NO QUARTER GIVEN a écumé pas mal de salles avant de signer chez Rising Records pour leur premier album, The Embodiment Begins. Que le groupe ait pu avoir un franc succès lors de ses concerts, cela ne m’étonne pas du tout. Leur musique énergique et rageuse est taillée pour la sueur et le sang et pour faire bouger mamie qui va exécuter des figures improbables en s’appuyant sur ses cannes. La recette du groupe est simple et fonctionne : des morceaux avec un caractère Hardcore très typé martelé par des guitares et une section rythmique qui n’en veut (pas du bien) avec un zest de phrasé guitaristique Thrash pour alléger le tout. On pourrait dire Metalcore, une fois, mais je préfère m’appesantir sur leur penchant pour le Hardcore parce que c’est quand même ce qui ressort le plus de cet album. C’est donc très direct et sans concession, mais comme je parlais de recette, c’est bien parce qu’elle est appliquée à chaque morceau. Du coup, on se retrouve avec quelque chose qui, prit dans son ensemble, est trop monotone. Pourtant, les rythmiques hachées et syncopées, la grosse caisse qui défonce les barrières, sont autant d’atout qui plaident en faveur de NO QUARTER GIVEN, mais à ne pas varier la sauce, on vire parfois au fade. Donc, chacun pourra trouver un morceau duquel il se sentira plus proche. Pour moi, c’est « Zoned ». Mais, finalement, j’aurai très bien pu en citer un autre, tellement les morceaux sont proches, aussi bien en rythmique qu’en mélodie. Et, malheureusement, le chant n’est pas là pour apporter des touches de différence. Elle est écorchée comme il se doit, mais ne varie pas de son intonation première.
Le groupe a de bonnes idées et possède une réelle énergie communicative. Cependant, il va lui falloir apprendre à changer de page dans son livre des recettes de grand-maman pour éviter de lasser.
