Sont-ils pas mignons avec leurs têtes de premiers de la classe nos amis britanniques ? Méfiez-vous néanmoins des apparences, car derrière leur air studieux se cache une force de caractère et une hargne improbable. C’est aussi ça la nouvelle génération ! La jeunesse, sa fougue et son envie détrônant des vieillards séniles et gâteux. Quelle vision juvénile du Metal tout-de-même… Dire que des groupes comme THE EYES OF A TRAITOR, il en existe plusieurs milliers. Ils grouillent sur le Web, prolifèrent via MySpace et se font remarquer avec un culot sans précédent. Certains percent, d’autre pas. Il ne faut pas remonter bien loin dans le temps pour trouver trace d’eux. Arrêtons-nous pour le fond en 2006 (date de leur création), pour la forme en 2007 (date de leur premier EP) et pour l’essentiel en 2009 (année d’explosion de leur bombe à retardement ; The Eyes Of A Traitor). Vous n’en avez probablement jamais entendu parler, pourtant, vous allez vous prendre cet album de plein fouet. Comme cet arrêt d’autobus qu’on distingue mal dans la grisaille matinale, la tête encore profondément au chaud à proximité du coccyx.
Autant vous le dire de suite, cette expérience est totalement inédite ! On ouvre grand les yeux (et les oreilles) devant le génie que renferme une piste comme « Under Siege ». Premier titre, première décharge de chevrotine. Guitares tranchantes, basse sereine, batterie tribale et par-dessus-tout, un chant clair planant et aérien, qui contraste fabuleusement avec les beuglements profonds de Jack Delany. A l’instar de l’œuf et de la poule, on serait presque tentés de demander qui de THE EYES OF A TRAITOR et de ALL SHALL PERISH est arrivé le premier, tant la ressemblance avec le dernier Awaken The Dreamers est frappante. Les guitaristes ont la même folie des sweeps (« Echoes ») et des rythmiques désarticulées, sans cohésion, avec charme. Je vous vois venir de loin : « oh la… mais ça reste du Deathcore, ce machin bruitiste et (pleins d’arguments aussi erronés et partiaux que fantasques) ». Ecoutez-donc « Chorus », vous n’aurez plus jamais la même conception du Deathcore. En plus d’une vraie pureté, cette composition renferme la quintessence de l’intelligence et de l’accessibilité. Un non-sens total à leur propre œuvre que sont la délicatesse du piano et la brutalité des vocaux. Car c’est aussi ça le formidable plus de cet album : une vraie diversité dans le choix des accords et des instruments. Le schéma chant/guitare/basse/batterie est totalement bouleversé par les orchestrations et arrangements qui procurent une sensation d’air frais que même Georges le Yéti n’aurait pas reniée. La complexité est de mise, on dirait que les gamins ont passé toute leur existence à disséquer leur son afin de le rendre le moins perfectible possible. Chaque riff est un spasme de chirurgien et THE EYES OF A TRAITOR nous oriente clairement sur les pas d’ION DISSONANCE, THROUGH THE EYES OF THE DEAD ou BRING ME THE HORIZON de par sa technique irréprochable et son arrogance déplacée.
Vous fondrez comme neige au soleil devant la vista de ces mômes qui frappent un grand coup dans la sphère Deathcore. Février n’est pas arrivé qu’on tiendrait déjà un disque majeur pour 2009 ? En tout cas, si Klapisch a réalisé « Le Péril Jeune », THE EYES OF A TRAITOR a signé A Clear Perception du sceau « La Rédemption Jeune ».
