STRAPPING YOUNG LAD poursuit sa mue vers des horizons musicaux qui risquent de décontenancer les fans de la première heure affamés de violence brute. Car ici, Devin Townsend ouvre encore davantage la porte à la variété de ses influences et à la diversité de ses sources d’inspiration tout en laissant plus de place aux mélodies. The New Black est donc autant un album de SYL que de Devin Townsend. Des titres comme “The Antiproduct” avec des touches de Jazz ou “Almost Again” illustrent bien cette mixité. Certes, on trouve sur cette galette des morceaux propres à inciter le cerveau à quitter la boite crânienne, mais il faut admettre que, dans l’ensemble, l’énergie est en baisse de régime.
Le vrai problème est qu’on a beau s’avaler cet album en boucle, on a du mal à en conclure qu’il est indispensable ! Ce qui est paradoxal c’est que les morceaux de qualité s’enchaînent, que l’on ne cesse de taper du pied (ou, même de headbanger) mais, au final on termine par un “mouai” d’assez mauvais augure. En définitive on s’interroge sur la pertinence du mélange des genres que Townsend a opéré ici : d’un côté la brutalité est trop estompée, elle perd en puissance, et de l’autre les ambiances envoûtantes n’ont pas assez de places pour se développer.
On notera la présence du titre “Far Beyond Metal” - avec la participation de Oderus Urungus de GWAR - que SYL jouait déjà sur scène.
Bref, un album agréable et puissant, avec quelques grands moments, mais qui a le cul entre deux chaises et qui ne devrait pas rester comme une œuvre majeure de Devin Townsend.
