Fort de deux albums et d’un EP, les Américains de HELL WITHIN s’inscrivent sans équivoque dans le courant actuellement très en vogue de la « New wave of American Heavy Metal ». Très proche d’un Killswitch engage, en moins mélodique toutefois, HELL WITHIN propose sur ce deuxième opus une recette surexploitée qui fait toujours mouche mais ne nous surprend plus : un savant mélange de Thrash US et de Hardcore, saupoudré d’une pincée de Death mélodique suédois, sans oublier bien sûr les inévitables refrains en chant clair. HELL WITHIN se démarque néanmoins légèrement de la concurrence grâce à la voix hargneuse et malsaine du chanteur, qui lorgnerait presque sur le Black, et aux nombreux soli de guitare, qui ne sont pas toujours de mise dans ce style.
L’album démarre sur les chapeaux de roue avec un « Godspeed to your deathbed » accrocheur qui place l’album sous le signe de la hargne et de l’énergie. Les titres suivants freinent quelque peu cet entrain à cause de leurs refrains mièvres et peu inspirés, mais les très bons « A world to murder » et « Self inflicted silence » insufflent à l’album un regain d’énergie. Qui a d’ailleurs tôt fait de se dissiper sur le titre éponyme « Asylum Of The Human Predator », surprenant de par sa prédominance de chant clair et ses mélodies aseptisées, un single radio diffusable qui en l’espace de quatre minutes réussit à discréditer le climat d’agressivité installé par les titres précédents. Les derniers titres sont mi-figue mi-raisin, mais l’album est suffisamment court pour que l’ennui ne se fasse pas trop sentir. On ne peut que regretter cependant que HELL WITHIN n’exploite pas son potentiel au maximum et reste trop dans l’ombre de ses aînés.
Asylum Of The Human Predator ne propose rien de bien excitant et ne fera sans doute pas date dans l’histoire, mais saura séduire les fans du genre de par sa relative efficacité.
