La première écoute de cet album est décevante pour de mauvaises raisons ; nous avons tellement l’habitude des live formatés, identiques les uns aux autres, que lorsqu’un artiste sort des schémas classiques, on perd pied. Nous attendions un best of avec les cris du public entre chaque chanson. Cet album est tout le contraire.
Glenn Hughes n’a pas cherché à faire un live pour faire plaisir au label ou pour faire du blé, mais pour se faire plaisir, et ça, forcément, on n’a pas l’habitude !
Le public est très peu nombreux et le mot « live » signifie davantage « enregistrement direct ».
Glenn Hughes a largement puisé dans son ancien répertoire pour le choix des titres, et après quelques écoutes, il est impossible de ne pas pénétrer dans cet univers feutré, chaleureux. Mélange de Rock, de Blues et de Hard Rock, la musique de Glenn Hughes est toujours envoûtante, d’autant que l’on a vraiment le sentiment d’écouter un témoin vivant de l’histoire du Rock moderne. Au carrefour de toutes ces influences, le magistral « Mistreated » est un sésame qui fait comprendre le choix d’une telle atmosphère. The Voice Of Rock sort encore grandit d’une telle aventure.
Signalons la présence de Kevin DuBrow (QUIET RIOT) qui participe aux chœurs et du batteur de RED HOT CHILLI PEPPERS, Chad Smith.
