Putain la baffe … d’habitude les groupes qui boxent (ou qui essayent …) dans la même catégorie qu’IN FLAMES ont tendance à me laisser de marbre, car je préfère 1000 fois l’original. Mais là je vais faire une expression. Oui, THE SORROW m’a mis sur le cul, avec son Blessings From A Blackened Sky. Je précise au passage que THE SORROW n’a rien à voir avec le personnage du jeu Metal Gear Solid 3 …
D’entrée j’ai été séduit par « The Dagger Thrust », si proche donc de ce que peut nous pondre le combo d’Anders Friden, ce Death Metal mélodique très technique, avec ses harmonies de guitares constantes. Sur « Knights Of Doom », la nostalgie s’est emparée de moi et c’est le grand CARCASS que j’ai reconnu, avant que le morceau ne soit entrecoupé d’un refrain ultra-mélodique en voix claire … Sensation garantie !
De même, que penser de ces lignes vocales ambitieuses et hyper accrocheuses sur « From This Life », si ce n’est qu’elles n’auraient pas fait tâche sur un bon album d’AOR ? Même sur « Darkest Red » (plombé et haché à souhait) et « Numbers Of Failure » (aux rythmiques tranchantes et saccadées … qu’il est bon de se remémorer Heartwork et Swansong !!!), THE SORROW développe un sens de la mélodie plus qu’honorable. Il faut savoir aussi apprécier cette aisance technique qui place d’entrée la barre très haut !
Le hic, car il y a un hic (et oui, sinon il aurait cinq étoiles l’album …), c’est qu’avec ce type d’opus on se demande si on n’a pas écouté 10 fois le même titre. Sauf que pour aérer intelligemment l’album, notons des accalmies bienvenues avec un interlude (sans titre) aux arpèges claires et solo planant, et « Saviour, Welcome Home », plus soft, pour clôturer tout ça.
Pour un premier album, on peut parler de carton. Dire que ce skeud est sorti depuis presque un an et qu’on a failli passer à côté …
