Oh my God ! Auraient-ils entendu mes cris de désespoir lancés au vent de ma review sur l’album Above ? En effet, j’y avais mentionné un changement total de leurs influences et l’oubli regrettable de tout ce qui fait leur particularité. Above se voulait dénué de toutes sonorités industrielles et de l’atmosphère festive/agressive que SAMAEL sait si bien mettre en notes.
En tout cas Lux Mundi démarre tel l’excellent Solar Soul et un Black Indus s’installe immédiatement et déverse déjà les flots lugubres de Vorphalack (chant). Si celui-ci semble toutefois reprendre un peu trop facilement la recette déjà connue, ça fonctionne et là, on reconnaît sans l’ombre d’un doute la patte Suisse.
Ce côté lent, mais bien appuyé sur chaque coup de baguette est de nouveau présent et le tout est soulevé comme à son habitude par des claviers reprenant allègrement une ambiance profane. Le grand gourou Vorphalack est de retour avec sa caste de disciples.
Ils entonnent au gré des pistes des airs venimeux qui ont autrefois laissés des traces dans nos veines. « Let My People Be ! » a repris les embruns d’un certain « Ave ! » et nous ramène avec évidence à ce qui nous manquait cruellement, des combinaisons inouïes alliant la brutalité du Black à la désinvolture de l’Indus.
Toutefois, même si des morceaux comme « Antigod » déploient l’artillerie lourde avec son flot frénétique de bpm, il sera à regret secondé d’une gratte malheureusement noyée sous des arrangements trop synthétiques. Et moi qui faisait appel à Dieu tout à l’heure … j’aurais dû prier davantage.
Des alliages justement dosés, on va pouvoir en savourer sur des titres tels que « For A Thousand Years » ou encore sur la bonne pêche qui se faisait attendre et qui arrive enfin sur « The Shadow Of The Sword ». Attention, en aucun cas j’irais jusqu’à dire que c’est transcendant, hélas.
Etonnant ? Oui, cet album l’est puisqu’il reprend les rouages de leur musique O.V.N.I en laissant sur le bas côté la désuétude du précédent opus, mais mon exigence inconditionnelle envers ce combo m’entraine à en réclamer un peu plus. Il y a pourtant des titres qui sonnent bien, mais ne m’auront pas retournée. Alors oui c’est un bon album mais je clamerais surtout le fait qu’ils aient pu se relever d’une chute aussi cafouilleuse qu’Above.
